i need some info on 440 kits. i just want what u have to do with a 440 kit to get it to true 11:1 compression. i read that u can use cosmetic gasket and an xr400 gasket to up ratios? can u use an automotive compression gauge to check compression? what do u all need to do to keep reliability and lots of power? i plan on putting in a JE or Wiseco 440 piston and a stage II hotcam. can u buy a stronger conn. rod anywhere so that it is more reliable? i know i can still run pump gas. thanx for all the info. i just wanna know all teh stuff u have to do i am assuming Ti valve springs, hardened rocker arms, stronger pushrods. anything else? thancx

400ex's don't have pushrods. they use a cam chain.

I aint no 440 expert but Ive seen first hand that a 416 piston with a longer rod(stroked to 440) will beat a regular 440 kit.
the 416 revs faster

a true 440 wont be beaten by a 416 :D

I prefere the stage I hot cam. It has more usable power but less peak power.

I run the Carrillo rods (much stronger than stock). You can buy them from many companies including Carrillo, JB Racing, GT, Pro Fab, and Sparks.

Renagade you said that with 11/1 compression you could run pump gas,I have a 440 stroker kit with 11/1 it ran great until I tried running Super instead of Trick and Super mixed 50/50 the first thing it did was ping and pulled the headstuds out and that was the last time I ran staight pump gas.Just thought I'd put that out there.

I have seen this same thing with a 11/1 piston.

ok, so who makes a good 440 kit? with evrything i need. i will have to run on pump gas so i guess my compression will be lower than 11:1. mickey dunlap said 11:1 would work with premium but i guess ur first hand expierience is better. also, where can i get a stroker kit. is it more than the bore and what does it involve. tthanx

get the ross piston, folks here claim it gives a true 11.2 with all the gaskets in place ....

Powroll at Powroll.com has a 440 stroker kit they also have high performance connecting rods. There stroker kit involves you sending them your crank for machining, they've been working on 4 strokes for 25 years and know what they're talking about,Im sure Pam(4 stroke guru) can anwser any ? you might have.

You can get 89mm pistons from JE and Ross that will get you in the area of or over 11:1 without having to deck the cylinder. If you get the Wiseco 89mm flat top, you'll need to deck the cylinder to get up tp 11:1.

My Wiseco 11:1 big bore kit really measured 9.6:1 once I got it together.

I'm redoing it now with a Ross 11.2:1 89.5mm and a Hotcam Stage 2.

Your stock rod will be fine if keep compression ratio under 12:1.

You cant use the xr400 gasket with an 89mm piston because its for an 85mm piston. You can get thiner head and base gaskets from Cometic to adjust c/r.

Most of the aftermarket cams won't require new valve springs but new rockers are a good idea to wear in with the new cam.

Good luck.

What, thats crazy unless you race! You can build a reliable 440 for play for $600!!!

piston/cam/gaskets $300
sleeve $70
rockers $90
machine work $150

Just because I am in a good mood tonight.

click here if you really want to know what to do (http://www.exriders.com/vbb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8316&highlight=have+you+decked+the+cylinder)

Its got to be one of the best threads and will give you the answers you are looking for.

Be happy to help you with any quesitons you come up with after reading that thread.

BTW just because you had put in a 11:1 piston doesnt mean you had a motor with an actual 11:1 comp ratio. I will tell you that I am getting a little more than the 11.2:1 that ross claims on this one. :) and the old wiseco was around 9:1 :( Its all depdedant on many things and you should deff be able to run pump premium at 11:1 unless there are other factors causing you to need more octane.
