how do you bleed the brakes and put all new fluid in? i need to pull my brake all the way for them to make very little contact. my pads are good. how do i make them really touchy?

to make them touchier i believe youll want to upgrade to a steel braided set of brake lines.

as for bleeding, im not sure about the fronts but from looking at it you have to remove the lid off the resevoir on the right side of the handlebars and you start by bleeding the further wheel first, so the left front wheel, clutch grip side. as long as the bleeder is the same size as the rear youll need a 1/4 inch wrench and a bowl to catch the brake fluid in. pop off the lid from the resevoir, make sure its topped up, press and reselease the brake lever a few times until it gets firm, hold it depressed, undo the bleeder a quarter turn and when the lever depresses all the way, close the bleeder and let go of the lever. youre gonna do this 5 or 6 times or until youre getting a steady flow of fluid. most people put a clear tplastic tube over nipple on the bleeder and watch the flow through it and once its solid with no air bubbles then that side is bled. also the bleeder is in tight, so before you start, loosen it up and then with a wrench close it so its snug but not tight. and after the left side is done then you do the right. hope that wasnt too confusing :)

if u want them touchier get a 450r front master cylinder, dont waste your money on a steel braided line. the front brakes are still pretty good on a 400ex, lol better then a banshee for sure

I was wondering about my rear brake pad. It's completely wore down and almost metal to metal. You know what the pads run at these days?

Haha steve man. Ihave so much automotive knowledge it makes my head stretch. I've done everything for motor work to custom turbo setups to nitrous to tranny swaps with some fab work. I'm just new to workong on these little motors so I ask to learn. And to answer you're question its nice to be able to help out :)

As for back brakes, are you after pads? Ebay is probably your best bet for all that stuff. Just look into what the part type is through google to make sure it isn't cheap knock off crap. Same with rotors. 40 bucks and up on ebay. The honda dealer here wants around 260 cdn for 1.

Is 30 bucks good for a rear brake pad because thats what I can get from a dealer around here.

That sounds decent. I paid 20 shipped off ebay. Check the online atv places and see how much they want. Generally a motorcycle store will get you a better price than the dealer

Install 450R front brakes if you want them touchy.

Is the whole 450r setup needed or just calipers?

the 450 res. would be much better than the 400. Does the 450 caliper even fit on the 400 spindles?

i found my rotor has a bit of play in the rear of mine. i can set the brake and it looks like the rotor isnt moving but i can push the bike back and forth a little before it finally stops. wonder if thats normal or if im just waiting for it to break off, haha

mine moves a tad bit, i guess i would say it is normal. steve

its normal for it to move a bit, if u notice it compress's the rear shock a little, and the little play that u say u can move your caliper with your hands, that is the sliding pins, little play is fine as long as its not too excessive. you can just buy a 450r master cylinder and it will bolt right up and give it a more precise brake feel, however if u want front 2 piston calipers from the 450r you need 06 and up front 450r spindals and calipers. i bought sintured metal brake pads for my quad from ebay, i paid 26 bucks i think for the whole set, there real good
