What's wearing out? Axle or hubs?

I have an issue, the back wheels seem to have play, nuts are tight and cotter pins are in place but the hubs still have play. What normally wears out, the axle or the hubs, neither has visual evidence of being wore out?????????/:confused: :confused: :confused: :confused:

Usually the hub splines will wear before the axle splines will.Take a good look at the splines and usually you can see them looking pointed or thin where they have worn from hammering back and forth.

You might have compressed the hub to where the washer is now bottoming out against the axle. Remove the wheel and when you remove the nut and washer, you should be able to see if the axle taper protrudes out to far. If so, just run a larger ID washer on the inside first and then your standard washer and nut.
