400 EX Shocks 101. Help?

Okay, when it comes to performance I'm on top of it but when it comes to suspension I'm GREEN! I have a '99 400 EX with shocks that could stand to be replaced. I ride the trails 100% so I was wondering about one very important question: If I had a new set of Honda shocks, how do they stack up against the aftermarket brands? I have access to a new set but would consider an aftermarket set if I thought they were leaps and bounds better. Is there a big difference?

Stock and aftermarket shocks aren't even in the same ballpark...don't waste your time getting another set of stockers unless your really strapped for money.
