View Full Version : Is my 450R clutch worn? Basket too?

I tried to find a thread on this topic, and I even thought I asked this question before. But......

Clutch slips on high end when in any gear. I was also kinda trapped down in this valley and had to just "limp it" out this weekend (meaning high rev) and it even started to sputter (the engine) when under a load (going up hill, 2-300 feet, Colorado) as if it was jetted incorrectly, which it is not. It ran perfect for many many miles before. There just seems to be nothing left of the clutch, and two friends who race dirt bikes MX, agree.

Question is, how do you tell if you need a new basket as well? Gonna order the Tusk plates and heavy springs, as I have heard good things about them, for the most part.

Just got layed off, tight budget. At the same time, want to ride a lot this summer!! (savings are important folks!)

Any suggestions on installation, as I have only done this once, about 10 years ago on a 2 stroke.

Thanks as always.
Ben

Buy stock 07 CRF clutch plates.
As for the basket, you can look on the sides when you take it apart, if it has little ridges you should replace it. Brand new is perfectly smoothe. I bought a hinson racing one for 150 on ebay, it was used but it didnt look like it at all and it had the gear thing on the back. Im not too knowledgable about clutches but thats my .02
good luck with it.

Thanks motofreak!

Curious - why buy 07 CRF OEM plates?

You can file down the ridges on the clutch basket ears to make them smooth again if the ridges aren't too deep. You can only do this once or twice depending on how bad it is before you need to replace the basket. I would recomend getting a DP clutch, they are kinda expensive compared to most out there but I think they are the best. Plus they come in a cool carrying case that you can use to store parts in. :)

yeah why?????? do they have a slightly larger surface area????

and always use stock honda oem clutch fibers... they are the best lasting and smoothest feeling.

and i just checked on the clutch fiber plates.... there is no difference in the two clutch plate fibers from a 2007 crf to a 2007 trx450r...

22201-meb-670 is the part # for both straight from honda

This is an '04 450R, will that make any difference using the 07 clutch plates?

I am on a pretty strict budget...

Idk why lol, my friend told me to. I think the differnce is in the springs. make sure the springs have the pink paint on it.

he just says they are better but if they are the same part then maybe there is a difference in the different year clutch plates. He says the 05 trx ones wear out faster.

I still have the stock clutch in my 05 and if i had to guess i'd say in the last 5 years i've put well over 500 hours on it and plenty of hard miles.
