View Full Version : Which sprocket for more low end?? (01' 400ex)

Thinking about playing with my gearing for more low end. Which should I swap out, the front or the rear?? My gearing is now stock, and I have never changed it. What is stock 01' 400ex gearing?? I understand that the smaller the teeth in the front will give me more low end, and the larger the teeth in the rear will also give me the same effect, but which do I change, or both?? And how many teeth should I change to that is safe to try.

Thanks!

Also, are they hard to put on/get chain back adjusted??

Stock gearing for your year is 15/38. Stock gearing on the '05 on up is 14/39. Replacing the front is much cheaper. Try a 14T. A 1 tooth change to the front is about equal to 3 teeth in back, FWIW.

The sproket bolts are the same correct? I've been thinking about getting a 39 rear from a 05+ to put on my 04 just for a tiny difference so I can stay in 3rd and 4th racing. My 3rd gear is almost able to get the RPM up there in a turn and really break the tires free and slide good but its not there yet. I dont feel like spending any more cash on the quad to make it faster and dropping a tooth in the front is too much of a change i will be shifting way too much and probally in between gears and thats not good. How much low end do you need?

I'm not sure about the rear sprocket, but I know that the front 99-04 has a different part # than the front 05-up.

not sure how much I need. I mostly do trail riding, and I figure low end would be what im after. How much of a difference would a 14T in front do?? Noticable?

Also, are these hard to install, require any special tools??

I have an '07 with 14/39 gearing and ride only trails, myself. I'm going to actually go up to a 15T front because I feel that I spend to much time shifting between 3rd and fourth on the faster trails. I think the larger front will allow me to stay in 3rd 90% of the time. I guess it's all in what you do...

Sprockets are simple to change. You don't need anything more than basic hand tools.

Ok. my next question. I am in need for a chain too. Which chain would I need to get? Stock length? Will stock length chain allow me to change sprocket size?

You wont regret doing this I had the same prob went to a 15T and it fixed it by far fixed it lol.

buy 2 sprockets on rockymountain get a 13T and a 14T for your 01 and shipping and all should be around $21

Changing is simple enough to do going 1 tooth down you most likely wont have to do anything more than adjust your chain. Going 2 teeth you might have to cut a couple links out to get it set right again.

Its a very simple thing to do and will give you :eek2: kinda difference in the power

So I should try 14T??

I figure, right now it seems as though I ride in 1st alot for trail riding/climbing/rocks, etc. So would the 14T allow enough more torque to be able to drive in 2nd mostly instead of 1st??

i bought a primary drive one from rocky mountain last year and its held up great.just get the stock size.you can adjust the chain but if you need to you can just take a link out but you shouldnt have to

Most 14ex you should be abel to lug it in second anyway yes 14T would shorten the first gear (so to say) and you will be running with more low end power meaning second will prob be more of your likeing in that situation but you will loose top end doing this but who goes that fast in the woods anyway lol.

When you change tires and gears to go for top end you take away from bottom same if you go for bottom you take away from top. To do the 22's and keep your bottom end your gonna have to do engine mods, carb mod or something. Try having your head ported and polished put on a shorty pipe of some kind short pipe will go for low end power.

If your not like just dragging then drop a front tooth size

agreed 14 tooth or a 39 in the rear. even both would be really awesome. steve

I couldn't tell the difference between a 38 and 39 but a 14 you will definitely notice that

in the rear ya want to drop at least 2 teeth to get the same effect as 1 on the front.

dont drop 2 teeth though go up 2 teeth. it will lose low and go faster with 2 dropped. steve
