Welcome to Hondas. Now just go get a lot of oil pints cause it always does this. :)

Seriously, dont be afraid. Your 400EX will always run just as strong, just make sure to triple check the oil cause you dont want to run out of it. ;)

On my 90EX in the last times I wouldnt even change the oil, it would burn off all by itself so I kept adding oil and was happy. :D

An oil change can help this as well. If your oil look black then it could be used up and nust need to be changed.

if its fresh oil clear kinda golden like honey then that wouldnt be the problem.

Check your oil ring on your piston. My buddy had the same prob when he got his 400ex.

Doesn't white smoke mean its lean? Do you every get a popping sound on deceleration?

yes i do could that be the fuel air mixture im not sure what jets it has or anything in it

Ya sounds like you are way lean. I would not ride that thing until you put a bigger main jet in it. I have no idea what size but ,. I would start of by going 3 sizes larger on the main.

There are other causes for it running lean, like an air filter with no oil, or a carb that has came loose, or unthreaded (like an FRC), or a leaky head gasket. So take a good look at her and look at everything.

i think it has stock jets in it but i have a slip on exahust and i just put on a new oiled filter so what do you think would be good and also where should the fuel/air mixture skrew be set at

Lean = smoke is news to me.

White/bluish smoke when decelerating is often caused by worn valve guides and/or valve seals. White/blue smoke when accelerating is often from worn piston rings.
