Well i have them both. A 89 250r with a ESR 350cc powervalve head, and a 08 honda 450ER with a big bore stroker 522cc Ice Cube head on it with my own Stage 2 PPE head, and an 86 ATC 250r with a cr500 motor in it. What do you want to know? Which is better? That depends on the rider. For me i love them both, but as you can see from above I love MONSTER POWER.

The 450r has tons of torque and you can lug the engine around. The reliability is awesome. The 450r does just about everything better than the 250r but better. The 450r has torque on hold when you need it where a 250r you either keep the revs up or you drop a gear. 4strokes are the new 2-stokes cuz we didnt have the technology as we did before and none of the companies wanted to make a race 4-stroke til a couple years ago.

The 250r is just awesome! It put high performance ATV's on the radar. You just jam through the gears and rev the heck out of it. I love the smell of 2-stroke smoke, it gets my heart pumping. The rebuild of an engine is alot cheaper to build than a 450r. There is that rush from the 250r power band that alot of us have grown use to and can use it to our benefit riding it. To me they are even in my eyes but I know alot will say otherwise.
For me its a tie. Just as long as its a HONDA,

had '87 250r, bought '06 450r new
time came I had to get rid of one of them..................
wish I could have kept the 250r also

I would give the 450r the win in every catagory but handleing
my 250r was better in the air (lighter to move) and would flat out carve my 450r through the corners

new 4 strokes just put so much more power to the ground

250r's are legendary, NO atv will ever dominate the others for the length of time honda did

for 20+ years if someone asked what you rode you only had to say one letter to get their respect

you can't look down on 2 stoke no matter what some will suprise the **** out off u--- my friend has a 1987 lt250r with some mods - and that lil thing stright up screams---- i seen him wax 450's,250r,banshee .. but you still have to bow to the (zilla's),, as far as honda 250r put an 1987 lt250r up their .. they have better built engines stock on stock( lt250r) all day---

dirt/ track, engine wise, 450r is better. Better engine breaking into corners, less shifting, clutch feathering, better traction, ect..

Mostly it would come down to rider.

I love the way my 250r's handle compared to the 450r. My 250r seems to jump and corner wayyy better.
But.. I have never riden a completely aftermarket suspension'd 450r.

In the sand, I would much rather have my 250r. It seems way more fun to me. Traction isnt as big of a deal as it is on dirt, (i'm not drag racing). The powerband makes it feel so much faster than the 450 (even though its pretty close)

I eventually will get a 450r, but will never get rid of my 250r..

Simply comes down to personal preference.

As others have said, the 450 rewards a rider with less energy required to keep the motor in the "meat" of the powerband. Though they are heavier.

The 250r on the other hand requires more enery to keep the motor in the meat, but is VERY light compared to the 450's and requires much less energy to manuver.

IF I had the money to do a full restored/fully prepped 250r I'd ride one. The problem with most is they're 20+yr old machines and they're tired. Many have been freshened up from time to time, but are mostly on worn out parts. The 450's are much newer and will have less issues and gremlins to hunt down.

I'm a 4 stroke man and a honda man but I don't think I could pass up a good deal on a quadzilla, those things haul hard!!

Quadzillas are awesome, until you want to do something other than go fast in a straight line. If all you want to do is drag race, a quadzilla or Banshee would be my first pick. Overall, I would rather have a 450R than a 250R, but I'm sure at some point in time I will own a 250, just not to race with.

hondariderdylan, yeah I sold the '05 250ex and the '04 z250 then picked up the '06 yfz450

they where good little quads but the yfz makes a better back up to the 450r

I've got both and have raced both for xc. I love the 250r powerband in the woods, I love how light it is and how well it corners. Stock for stock the 250r will out handle a 450 anyday of the week.
I think to make the 250r comparable you really need to spend some cash on the whole bike. Motor, susp, frame to get it compatible to the reliability of the 450r. My biggest issue is mechanical for races. IT seemed that every race I had some silly issue that stalled me for 5 minutes or so. old brackets braking, bolts stripping out from age.
For the money you could have an awesome R that would compete and out handle a newer 450. But you don't have to ebay for parts on the 450r

TOTALLY PREFFERANCE.
I love em both.

i used to have a 450 but now i have a 250r hybrid, it has a yz426f motor in it, i would like to put a 250r motor in it because i've seen 250r's get out of the hole and corners alot faster than the 450's, as far as handling goes i would say the 250r is one of the best handling quads.
