noticed the button to start my atv was starting to act up today, had a few times where i couldnt get it to start and had to play with it for a bit before it would go. do i need to replace the entire assembly on the handlebars or can i just get a new switch for it? hell if need be ill wire up a waterproof pushbutton switch and screw it into the plastic. also how much can i expect to spend on it?

lucky you. my atv has been really good to me. i ran it hard for 6 hours today without any issues except for the starting thing. but it ran hard all day and only burnt through about 5 liters of fuel in those 6 hours. thats some cheap fun right there :D

it should work fine as long as he did the wires right for the reverse switch. I take it he hooked them together and taped it all up. steve

i get 50 miles to the gallon on mine with the 416. it gets better milage now than it did before i put it in. It is jetted great right now. i am lucky that i have not had to do too much to mine. the bearings the shop put in were cheapo or something cause i would go through a set a year until i put them in myself now it has been great. i have ridden for a year with oil changes and such. I have to tighten my chain for the first time in 3 years. it has been the best machine that is why i buy hondas. steve

so the 04 has a reverse gear then? and the switch is on there? can i just simply take the wires for the push button and run them to a any switch? i might just run a switch of my own.

mine gets great milage too. ive got a k&n, slip on, drilled air box, sparks key and i ride harder than my neighbour does and today we both filled up after our ride. keeping in mind i started full and he filled up 5 minutes in. we both topped up. cost him 4.35 and cost me 5.16. he runs 87 octane and i ran 91, usually 94. so figureing that the 91 is almost 12 cents more per liter, i think i made out pretty good, and i tend to ride alot harder than him :D

the 04 did not have reverse. sorry about that it is the start in gear thing for the clutch that was removed.

if you want to get rid of the whole switch unit all together you should give honda#4 a shout. I know he has done it to make a cr switch work for a starter button. I think that is what he used anyway. there is a way to splice it so it closes the connection just to the starter when needed. that would be a normally open switch that is wired into the main wires for the starter. It would have to be in line with the wires instead of being grounded like a kill switch is. I am not sure of what wires to use off hand. I think honda knows which it is. I dont have a wiring diagram handy or i would look for you. steve

I think there are only 2 wires going to it. So ones a powehe other goes to the starter. So all I'd need to do is extendhose wires to a new switch of my choosing and wire them up. But I'd have to find a waterproof switch first and then mount it. I was thinking lower on the bars near the clamp from the stem just to hide it a little.

that would work. if you know what wires to use i would do it, as long as you dont want a light switch or something. I would get a cr kill switch and wire it in there. they are small, descrete, and can be placed anywhere. honda has his facing forward between his grip and his lever so he can hit it as he is pulling the clutch. it is a sweet setup. maybe i can get him to post a pic when he comes on in a bit. i think you will like it. i am not sure if the cr killswitch is normally open or not though. I would say it is from experience with killswitches. It would be killer to do when i get my bars this week but i use my lights alot so i need the switch. steve

Yeah yeah I get what you mean. Would be cool. But I don't plan on removing the entire assembly. I use my lights aswell. I simply wanna cut the wires that go into the actual button and extend them down from the switch and mount them to a new button ;)

Dallas used a kx switch instead of a cr switch. i think he is going to post his switch install thread he has. steve

Here's my thread on my Starter http://www.exriders.com/vbb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=367812&highlight=honda4 ,

my starter is a KX style switch, I've heard that a CR is ground to the bars and if water gets on might cause a shock

That looks pretty good. I'm gonna go the same route except I'm gonna keep the assembly with the headlight switch. I'm just gonna put a new button on. I wonder if I can make one of tose automotive start buttons the kids are buying as an aftermarket item work on the quad.
