Round #7 of the Can Am GNCC Series made the climb into the Laurel Highlands region located near Somerset PA for another exciting round of cross country racing action.

As far as terrain, Mountain Ridge offers a pretty brutal layout that tests man and machine as rocks are as common here as any race on the circuit. There are plenty of fast field sections, but dry conditions would curtail the speeds for many as dust cut visability to near zero in some sections.

I arrived friday evening just before dark and the place was already packed. Pennslyvania is a hot bed of racing action and draws a big crowd as this is the home turf for many top riders.

For some, an early morning arrival would mean unpacking and getting geared up as the action heated up around them. This is a close round for alot of racers...something I know I was grateful for!

Yamaha backed racer Traci Cecco is always full of smiles as she prepares to get things underway. Traci has won so many championships that she doesn't seem to get rattled when adversity happens to find her. I was confident in his ability, but murphy's Law tends to follow people so I would be praying and keeping my fingers crossed for a safe and wreck free start for everyone:p

It's always good to see folks in a good mood and ready to have some fun at the track. There is so much money and time invested that it could easily be a very high pressure, work overloaded enviroment that fun and good times could be replaced with stress and worry more then it already is:p

The Schoolboy class itself is a testement to how important the youth racing program is to the GNCC series. Josh Merrit has won many races in the Mini classes in the past few years and now is running his heart out in the morning race. The progress of this class is amazing, and we would see 31 racers entered this round!

Pappy

Glenn Pritchard charged ahead as the overall leader, and within seconds Angel Atwell would come blasting through this section

The dust was just begining as the dry conditions would serve up some serious dust. Thankfully, there was enough wind to help keep it blown out of the area but we all still got covered:p

I've riden this area before and it can be rough as you would ever want. I think I would have prefered a big UTE for this race as well!!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 03:02 PM
Rick Cecco was riding well, smooth and strong. Ricks goal isn't to win every race, but he wants to be upfront and get those points at each round!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 03:04 PM
Cecco had the lead in U2 and Mike Benson wanted it! Benson doesn't slow down for anything and it's checkers or wreckers for him at every round!

I had the protection of a decent sized tree between me and any rider who got off track in the dust:p

Passing could be had in the field sections, and when it does occur, you had best be off the marked trail and in a safe spot!

Pappy

Mike Benson
Micheal Swift
Glenn Pritchard

Getting on the morning podium can come down to seconds, and you will find the front runners making every second count as they rip into scoring.

Lexie Coulter wouldn't find the podium this round, but she would secure a second place finish behind Atwell!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 06:12 PM
Jennifer Albright knows all to well how seconds count as she followed Kristen Atwell in to claim 4th in the Womens class!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 06:15 PM
Scott Kilby would find himself the class leader in 4x4 Open as he takes the checkers. I know in my heart Kilby would have liked to have battled for the win with Buckhannon but it wasn't meant to be as Bryan was headed for the hospital.

Racing is racing, and a win is a win. Congrats Scott! I know Bryan would have cheered you on if he was there!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 06:17 PM
Rick Cecco would finish 2nd to Benson today, and one of the first things Cecco did was to find Benson and shake his hand. Sportsmanship and Respect folks, I love to see it!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 06:25 PM
This was a big win for Benson. he has been trying for 3 years to get another overall and today it all fell into place for him!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 06:26 PM
Glenn raced his heart out but came up just a wee bit short in grabbing the overall. It was some great racing watching him pound out lap after lap and I have no doubt he will get an overall soon!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 06:28 PM
For the Can Am crew, it was agreat day and a bad one as the injured Bryan Buckhannon was in everyones thoughts. Micheal Swift was quick to acknowldge his team and mechanic for their dedication and hard work in making his race program so good.

Pappy
05-17-2009, 06:29 PM
Swift strokes his trophy and was satisfied with his finish I would think:p

Pappy
05-17-2009, 06:30 PM
The beer would be on Benson as well as he grabbed some pocket money for getting himself the holeshot!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 06:31 PM
The podium was full of happy rascals thats for sure!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 06:32 PM
Warm bubbly:p Yuck:D

Pappy
05-17-2009, 06:32 PM
Benson was eager to share...but Swift can't hold the hard stuff:devil:

Pappy
05-17-2009, 06:34 PM
The morning race was complete, we had 3 very proud people on the podium and some of the best racing of the day was still on tap!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 06:39 PM
The afternoon race was on the line as the wind blew and the dust swirled.

Bill Ballance has been fighting back this season and looked like he was relaxed and tuned in as he awaited the start. Taking a few seconds to clear your mind can have some positive effects.

Pappy
05-17-2009, 06:41 PM
Jeff Pickens was looking like he meant business. This race is held on his home soil and he wasn't the only one wanting to claim the win.

Pappy
05-17-2009, 06:42 PM
Brandon Sommers doesn't care what state he is in...a win is good in any state:D

In 2008, Sommers came oh so close to pulling off the win at this round.

Pappy
05-17-2009, 06:43 PM
William Yokely gets his arms rolled out to help with cramping.

Pappy
05-17-2009, 06:44 PM
Johnny Gallagher was looking ready, and he said he was ready to tackle what lay ahead.

Pappy
05-17-2009, 06:45 PM
Taylor Kiser is in the hunt for the XC1 championship and knows he faces a battle at every round.

Pappy
05-17-2009, 06:47 PM
I told my son before the race that if I had to put money on a winner at this round it would be Chris Borich. He likes it rough and with the field sections at this round abundant, he could really open it up when needed.

Borich has claimed the win at Mountain Ridge the past 2 years running and would be looking to make it number 3!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 06:49 PM
Adam McGill has the championship dead in his sights and a game plan to obtain it. Dropping off the podium in only 1 round thus far, he is well on his way to being in a prime position to take the whole thing come season's end

Pappy
05-17-2009, 06:50 PM
There is nothing like a good ear flick to take someones mind off things:D

Pappy
05-17-2009, 08:03 PM
I had alot of people asking why Harlen and I were both at this race, and the answer is pretty much that we both were close and this is a spread out event requiring 2 shooters to get all the images we need to meet our obligations:p So you will see a mix of images from here on out that were captured by us both.

Duane Johnson was ready to tackle the rocks and dust that awaited him. Johnson has been putting in solid rides and has him finishing inside the top 10 at most rounds so far this season

Pappy

Bonnie Cook giving Brian some pre race orders, or reminding him of the "Honey-Do" list that is hanging on the kitchen fridge at home:devil:

Jarrod McClure is one busy young man. When he isn't competing in the GNCC series, he can be found on the west coast running the WORCS series. McClure found the podium out west last round as he finished 3rd in the WORCS race, just the day after competing at the Titan GNCC!

Chris Bithell hoping things would work out here in PA

Pappy
05-17-2009, 08:11 PM
I thought I found a huge problem facing Brent Sturdivant as I was cruising through the Warnert Pit.

Brent had found a horseshoe (as well as a handfull of 4 leaf clovers) while walking the track at the Titan. He kept the horseshoe in his toolbox. Ofcourse them Yankee's that run the show had it pointing down letting all the luck run out:(

Toss that one son, you need a new one for the luck to work

Pappy
05-17-2009, 08:13 PM
Mr. McGill (Adams dad) talks to his son and Chris Borich. Maybe he forsaw the battle that was about to unfold:D

Pappy
05-17-2009, 08:20 PM
The XC1 class fired off the line and Thomas Wright would lead the charge to turn one........however his charge would end as he found himself off his ride and meeting terrafirma!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 08:24 PM
Wright would ball up and brace for impact but thankfully none would come.

The firstturn wreck would bunch up those behind him, Ballance, Kiser and Sommers mainly who now faced missing a shot at being out front!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 08:24 PM
McGill was clear and now off and running!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 08:25 PM
It wouldnt be the #3 ride out front when turn two was incountered, it would be PA's own Jeff Pickens grabbing the holeshot!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 08:29 PM
Pickens charge (sounds like something from the civil war:scary: ) was going to be a real battle as the class raced out of the turn.

Pappy
05-17-2009, 08:32 PM
Bithell would stay to the inside at turn 3 while Borich applied the power and the pair now headed for a long downhill section.

Pappy
05-17-2009, 08:33 PM
Sommers and Kiser would have their work cut out for them if they wanted upfront!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 08:35 PM
Xc2 would go next and it would be the KTM of Josh Kirkland grabbing the holeshot!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 08:36 PM
From my vantage point, I couldn't see the racers until they exited turn two and it then would be clear who was out front!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 08:38 PM
Brian Wolf was knee deep in it as he works his way to turn three!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 08:41 PM
Eric Wilezek would find himself wrong side up at the start but would battle back and have a decent day!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 08:42 PM
AJ Koontz works his Honda through turn three. AJ would have a rough day.

Pappy
05-17-2009, 08:44 PM
Michael Lucas pulls the holeshot in Vet A 30+

Pappy
05-17-2009, 08:46 PM
The dust was starting to roll into the starting area as the XC 1 and XC2 classes made a pass downwind.

Glenn McConnell grabs the holeshot in Senior A

Pappy
05-17-2009, 08:48 PM
Ryan Drake would jump to an early lead in College A

Pappy
05-17-2009, 08:49 PM

Pappy
05-17-2009, 08:51 PM
Nick Wheeler grabs himself the holeshot in Junior A

Pappy
05-17-2009, 08:53 PM
Arthur Blystone hangs it out as he works through turn 3 in Vet B

Pappy
05-17-2009, 08:55 PM
Justin Kirchhoff takes the holeshot in College B

Pappy
05-17-2009, 08:57 PM
Cory Blinkiewicz lets it rip as he rides out front in Junior B

Pappy
05-17-2009, 08:58 PM
David Burton would have a long day ahead of him. Dave is a great rider, but the conditions here can really test you!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 09:02 PM
Now you tell me how he managed to break a chain and ride back to the pits:devil:

Before I get 100 emails telling there is no way, I know he was being towed:p

Pappy
05-17-2009, 09:08 PM
Harlen jumped on his pitbike and jetted off into one bottom as I humped it over to another. (This is why I have a drop dead sexy figure and he ...well if I like my job I better stop there:devil: )

McGill was out front and riding like it was his last race ever!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 09:12 PM
Borich and Bithell would be playing follow the leader for awhile!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 09:13 PM
Johnson was running upfront and I know I am not the only one who would like to see him pay a visit to the podium!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 09:14 PM
Tyler lenig was another rider who was benefiting from being upfront as the road ahead was a touch clearer!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 09:15 PM
William Yokely had gotten a decent start and was now in Brian Cooks sights as the pair races on

Pappy
05-17-2009, 09:16 PM
Sommers was about to tangle with Sturdivant as Sommers started moving up!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 09:18 PM
Kirkland held the lead in XC2 as Brian Wolf remained close behind in second.

For Mark Knottman, the day would progressively get worse.

Pappy
05-17-2009, 09:20 PM
Tom Wright was back up and running after his first turn wreck.

Pappy
05-17-2009, 09:21 PM
McGill continued to pull away as he had clear track ahead of him.

Pappy
05-17-2009, 09:22 PM
Chris Bithell was blazing fast as he stayed just ahead of Borich who can be seen dancing with the rocks in the background!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 09:23 PM
Cook put the whammy on Yokely as the pair works through a woods section

Pappy
05-17-2009, 09:25 PM
Kiser was on a mission as he raced through the woods. The boy may hail from the Florida sand, but he can run the east coast woods as well as anyone!

Ockerman leads Johnny Gallagher and McClure as the trio works the track.

Pappy
05-17-2009, 09:28 PM
Brian Wolf had caught the XC1 class and would now try to put a few of those riders behind him!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 09:30 PM
Santo Derisi charges ahead. Derisi has his work cut out for him these days with trying to balance a personal life, his business and helping his father run the family business. Many racers are in the same position and it gets tougher every week.

Pappy
05-17-2009, 09:32 PM
When the riders reached me in the other side of the course, McGill was flat hauling the mail!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 09:33 PM
Bithell still held second and was looking more like a desert racer as the wide open field runs were flat scary to watch!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 09:35 PM
Borich looked smooth as glass and really, didn't appear as fast as McGill or Bithell......but this terrain is brutal, maybe he knew all he needed to do was save just a dash of energy to make a full throttle run at the leader when it mattered most!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 09:36 PM
The skies grew very dark and I was kind of hoping for just a splash of rain to quell the dust.

Kiser gets ready to work on Ockerman as the pair looks ahead to another wide open run!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 09:37 PM
McClure takes a face full of Ballance's roost as he runs on his grab bar. i think that may have been the only way to see through the dust!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 09:39 PM
Blake Kramer gives me a once over as he drops the hammer for the long run tothe next corner. The debris in his a-arms tells the tale of passes made

Pappy
05-17-2009, 09:40 PM
Parker Jones was looking good and was running upfront in XC2

Pappy
05-17-2009, 09:42 PM
Dave Simmons runs unchallenged in Senior A!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 09:44 PM
James Cobb would run to a 9th place finish in Vet A

A broken Polaris and a dejected rider await a tow in the background

Pappy
05-17-2009, 09:46 PM
Glenn McConnell running 2nd to Simmons. It takes some doing to unseat Simmons...like a baseball bat and a dark night before race day...and then someone MIGHT have a shot at him on the track!:p

Pappy
05-17-2009, 09:47 PM
Cody Javens would run a solid race and finish 2nd in College B

Pappy
05-17-2009, 09:48 PM
i ronically, the very next rider to fill my lens was Cody's dad Shawn Javens who would go on to claim yet another win in Senior B!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 09:52 PM
Call me stupid, but if McGill was so fast then i shouldn't be able to get out of his way:eek:

McGill was ripping apart the PA countryside and it was something to see. He blew past me and for the next 45 seconds all I could hear was his exhaust note at full throttle!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 09:54 PM
Now Borich wasn't jacking around, and he too went by my position like a fat girl afetr a ham sandwich! I turned to my son and told him that Borich would be there at the end. Cody replied back that there was a whole lit of racin' left:p

Pappy
05-17-2009, 09:56 PM
Cook had pulled up into the number 3 spot, with Sommers closing in on him and Taylor Kiser hunting Sommers!

Bill Ballance was in the thick of it, and would later explain that the dust forced him to back off the throttle alot more then he would have liked.

Pappy
05-17-2009, 09:57 PM
Back on the other side, McGill continued his assault

Pappy
05-17-2009, 09:59 PM
Borich still charging ahead but did not appear to be reeling in McGill

Pappy
05-17-2009, 10:03 PM
The rock gardens would seperate the riders for sure...and at times it would become a test of strength and agility as teh riders literally muscled their way through them

Pappy
05-17-2009, 10:04 PM
Ockeman works his YFZ over a rock that i'm sure has claimed its share of sprockets

Pappy
05-17-2009, 10:13 PM
Bithell would drop back and I was sad to see it happen. the kid has talent and I wish some luck would befall him.

Pappy
05-17-2009, 10:14 PM
Broken machines seemed to be everywhere

Pappy
05-17-2009, 10:17 PM
It's kind of funny. Harlen went further away to find some wetter areas void of dust in one bottom, but the darkening skys left him no oppertunity to get back into the woods very far.

I stuck to an area that I hoped would be helped by the wind and keep the dust cleared out.

Neither one of us had the luck we were looking for:p

Pappy
05-17-2009, 10:17 PM
Cory Blinkiewicz would ride to a class win in College B!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 10:21 PM
I saw Joe Borich come down this field with a pitboard in his hand so I knew the leaders were coming soon.

Then I could hear one of them coming and it was McGill. Now I missed the shot as it happened fast and was pretty far away, but McGill shown in this picture is looking over at Joe after almost wiping out bigtime! McGill put that KTM on every wheel at different times and how he saved it is beyond me..luck, skill...call it what you will but his lead almost was gone in the bat of an eye:p

I later asked Joe what he wrote on that pitboard to make Adam almost crash:devil:

Pappy
05-17-2009, 10:22 PM
I pointed my finger at my head when he passed me, telling him to use his head. He responded with a war cry and a stab of the throttle:devil: Thats my boy:scary:

Pappy
05-17-2009, 10:26 PM
Now when Chris passed his dad, I could hear his engine pick up. Knowing that McGil was well within his reach (around 45 seconds) Borich would now start doing what he knows best, and thats going real fast on a quad!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 10:27 PM
David Burton would run to a 10th palce finish today in Junior B

Pappy
05-17-2009, 10:29 PM
Bithell and Lenig trying to get it done as 2 laps remained.

Pappy
05-17-2009, 10:32 PM
Ballance wouldn't get into a position to challenge the leaders on this day, and would finish out the day in the 5th spot

Pappy
05-17-2009, 10:33 PM
McClure would put forth a decent ride and finish the day in 7th

Pappy
05-17-2009, 10:34 PM
Don Ockerman looked to be riding well, but for so many, making up time would seem impossible

Pappy
05-17-2009, 10:35 PM
Duane Johnson would find himself in 10th when the race ended

Pappy
05-17-2009, 10:37 PM
Josh Kirkland had found his way around Brian Wolf to regin the lead in XC2 and would hold that lead until teh checkers flew! Wolf would have to settle for second, but a damn fine effort and I know he was pleased.

Pappy
05-17-2009, 10:39 PM
I hustled it up to the scoring area as my watch said almost 3pm. Once I arrived there I could see the 2 to go card out and this would be the final lap once the leaders checked in.

Borich had found what he needed out on the track and had closed the gap. As the pair raced in to scoring, it was nose to tail!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 10:41 PM
With one more lap to go, and these two incredibly talented racers literally running dead even, I would have given anything to have teh riding skills just to follow them through that last lap!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 10:42 PM
In other classes, pit crews and teams would be having their fill of success and failure. For Vicky Fowler, it was another day at the office as Walker Fowler was well out front in the College A class.

Walker would win the class and once again find himself top amateur!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 10:44 PM
We have been following the season of several racers this year and one of them is Gabe Phillips. Phillips met one of his goals last round by securing the holeshot in XC2. This round wouldnt be as kind to Gabe as he finished out the day in the 16th spot. Gabe would succumb to a wreck and injury this round.

"The race didnt start out where i wanted it to, so I played catch up all day long. I was running 6th and around the 5 or 6 mile marker on the last lap I hit a ditch in the field and went rolling. I dislocated my hip and had to get an ambulance ride out of there. I hope I can get better soon and be back by millfield..."

We all wish you a speedy recovery!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 10:46 PM
Jamie Bithell is no slouch on a quad, and has seen his season so far filled with successes and rounds he would like to pull a mulligan on:p Jamie would finish 5th in College A

Pappy
05-17-2009, 10:48 PM
The time seemed endless as we awaited the leaders to make it to us for one final time. When the riders emerged, it was Chris Borich in the lead! His engine was knocking horribly and smoking but he wasn't going to give it one ounce of kindness and would beat on it until he either won or it left him sitting!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 10:49 PM
Borich one turn from victory!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 10:51 PM
That was it! Borich had done it! After a grueling race and an unbelievable last lap that saw both racers take and lose the lead position, he would cross the finish line taking the win!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 10:52 PM
McGill looks back after scoring to see who would claim 3rd, but he would have to wait because 3rd place was a few minutes out yet!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 10:54 PM
Brandon Sommers would best Taylor Kiser on the last lap to claim the final podium spot!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 10:56 PM
Borich and McGill would exchange congrats and quick tales of the adventure they had just been on.

Pappy
05-17-2009, 10:57 PM
Teammates and family and fans quickly absorb the riders after such an event. The win is not the riders alone and everyone wants to share in the expierence and express themselves!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 10:58 PM
Adam is an animal but one the most fun riders to be around...especially if he does good:D

Pappy
05-17-2009, 10:59 PM
I think Brandon Sommers has found the combination of things he needs to win. Thats two podium visits in as many races....keep your eye on him!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 11:02 PM
The rain I had wanted did come, unfortunatley it came just as the riders rode atop the podium:p

Pappy
05-17-2009, 11:07 PM
A drenched Jason Weigant gets the skinny from McGill. Adam was telling everyone about that last lap and it was an awesome piece of work if I must say so:D

Pappy
05-17-2009, 11:09 PM
Adam may have had to settle for second, but it has to be a good feeling knowing he is back on course!

05-17-2009, 11:12 PM
Chris Borich and one proud Papa Joe!

Way to go kid....you earned it bigtime!

Pappy

Jeff will bounce back!

Pappy
05-17-2009, 11:19 PM
The rain that pelted us during the podium was welcomed by some and cursed by others.

The XC2 Podium would feature Josh Kirkland taking the win, Brian Wolf second and thrid would fall to a hard charging Parker Jones.

My eyes were burning so bad from the dust that I had no choice but to bail and try to flush them. Harlen was being attacked by his camera condom and nifty clear rain slicker and we just didnt get any thing worth a hoot for you XC2 boys and we apologise:p

Thats it folks. I will add some Youth and UTV coverage tomorrow but for now I gotta call it a night. 6 cups of coffee, 2 Mountain Dews and 2 packs of smokes got me through this coverage in one looonnnggg stretch:p I have suffered arm pump from the keyboard and I am pretty sure a good case of monkey butt from sitting for so long! It was awesome seeing everyone again, and I will catch up with you guys at the next round!

Great Work to you and Harlen! You both caught the action from all angles as always. My "sissy" pit stop was worthless since my Gatorade had dissapeared so lets just say I stopped to say Hi to my mom, lol, That was the 1st time my parents ever attended a GNCC and they enjoyed it even if Dads Dodge viper got dusty, ha ha. I had a solid day and look to continue on at the Penton in 3 weeks.:D

Pappy
05-18-2009, 08:04 AM
BJ, I was watching to see if you had a problem, glad it was just a no drink situation:p It was great seeing you again and you need to step it up at the Penton!!! (You know i'm a motivator LMAO!)

We have video from the afternoon races, however they are sent to our editor and will be posted shortly.
