I'm looking for help here. Let me start off by saying I hate hate hate painting, especially painting wood. Now with that out of the way.:p

I built my mom a dresser to match the rest of her furniture in her bedroom and I just got to paint it black.:ermm: I plan on using a paint sprayer. But I'm clueless what kind of primer and paint to go with. Should I go with latex or oil based? Whats the pros and cons. Any help or tips would be great.

Oil base is nice for woods because it soaks down into the wood a little better then the latex paints.. But it's one of those 50/50 things.. most painters may tell you to use a latex paint but I find the latex works best on drywall and concrete walls.. The oil base IMO gives you a really nice glossy finish but it takes a longer period of time to dry.

We own a painting business which is funny cause I paint cars but dad paints houses... :blah:

Yea, I was leaning towards oil based. I never had any luck with latex paint. I'm looking for a dull satin black finish. For the primer I should try to get as dark as i can get?

Dull satin finish... Sherwin Williams makes some black stain. You should look into it. Don't need to prime it and it makes for a good finish with several light coats.

If it is bare wood you dont need to prime it. Make sure its sanded and use a tac rag right before you paint it. Also use quality paint and not some gay stuff. Benjamin Moore is good stuff.

prime it with any latex paint. Then apply the enamel/ oil base.

Word of advice, wear a mask.. that stuff is strong.

Well I went to home depot last night and picked up a pint Rust Oleum semi gloss and flat black paint. I didn't use a paint sprayer, instead I used a bush. Tried it on a scrap piece without primer and it looks almost exact. I went with the semi gloss and after three coats and a few swipes with .000 steel wool to smooth it out and it sure does look like a winner. I'll post picture when its all finished. I'm probably going to do four or five coats.

Heres the link to the paint if anyone is interested.

My one concern is to apply a primer or not. On the web page says to apply primer to bare wood? A few people on here and outside of here said primer isn't needed on bare wood. I'm worried about the air and moisture in the porous of the wood plus I don't want the grain to bleed out (which is did but not to to bad)

But the real reason is that I lost health insurance. If not my fat *** would be sitting on a new YZ250.:p

Amen on the house thing. I'm not renting, so I'm either going to buy or build a place. Just got back from the PVA looking at a couple different lots.

120K? Musta been pretty racked up!

All work, no play. I just about have all my crap paid off, time to go deep in debt. LOL. I make pretty decent working for my dad, do A LOT of side work, work on fourwheelers, cut firewood, Haul hay, work in tobacco, etc etc.

Oh yeah, been single for just over a year now. That helps a lot more than you think.

In the sign business. Custom signs mostly, but we do everything to custom paint, custom graphics, yard signs (real estate) and everything inbetween.

It was... but I started sweeping floors there at 7, and was on the payroll at 12. It's just a matter of time before I burn out. Maybe then I can go put that college degree to work. I went to a tech school and majored in Industrial Maintenance, but I don't know if I can handle a plant job. I like the outdoors too much.
