about to purchase an 400ex

im about to purchase a 400ex. It is all modded out and what not. i purchased a 300ex running about for a month and now i brought it to the shop and needs 2000 dollars to fix the bike! When i go and look at the bike any ways to check if the motor and the bike is healthy? such as gearing... how it sounds.. just leave me sum info on what to look to look for and how it should be. thanks!

compression test it is the best way.

no u have to get a compression tester.

Listen to the engine for excessive noise. Check the oil to see what condition it is in. Check the air filter. Take the air filter off if the owner will let you. Look for dirt in the snorkel tube. Ask a TON of questions about maintenance, known problems,upgrades, who did the work. Just try and get as much history on the bike as possible. And of course ride it. Ride it easy then rip on it a bit.
