In the near future I plan on trading my 1982 ATc 250r for a 1986 Lt 250r Quad racer. This is the non pv motor right? Any flaws I should look into? Weak parts in the frame? Only owned 1 zuki in my life and it was a lt 250 quadrunner hard tail. Im a Kawasaki Tecate man my self. Not into quads that much but want to own something different then my tecates.
Anyway. Buddy claims it only has 1st gear. So I assume he did not put the motor in neutral when tearing down the motor, Or he bent/broke a shift fork. He only wants 700$ and I wanted 1100 for the R. The quad racer looks in better shape and looks to be all there unlike my 250r. Here are some pics.

It does look to be an 85 or 86 motor (water pump), and yes your correct, those do not have a Powervalve. 87+ did. Looks like its missing the stator side cover?? The plastics are off a 92 (front) and 91 (rear) well at least by the graphics. Not sure what to tell you about the tranny problem though....
Check the frame over really, REALLY good!! They are very prone to cracks, especially around the a-arm mounts, and lower frame rails and near swinger bolt.
The original swinger was very weak also, they were prone to cracks... so look it over well.
Check the engine cases REALLY well for cracks and re-welds or JB welds..

I think that is kind of a lot for one that doesn't even run through all the gears. I just picked up a 92 in excellent condition, all original, ran perfect for $1,000. I think you could do a little better or knock a couple hundred off the price at least... my .02

Well it all depends on where you are I guess. Bikes like the quad racer and 250r go for alot around here. 2-4000$ I thought the mag cover looked to be missing. So how do you tell the difference in bikes? I thought all the quad racers/zillas had that funny seat?
I however do not like the pinkish purple frame and hood. I hope they did not come with a pink hood. Is it aftermarket? I know alot of these bikes came in a few colors and lots of colors are avaliable aftermarket.

85 and 86's came with a straight blue seat and a black hood. None came w/ purple at all, but many added purple stuff to them. 1987 and up had a T shaped seat and a powervalve on the motor and blue hoods. The rear swingarm on the 85-86's have a round style housing, and 87+ had a square type. Forgot where u were... I say do the trade if the motor cases are good and frame is good, but make him add some cash for parts you'll need to get it going right....

Hos much could it cost for tranny parts? Its not like my Kawasaki Tecate 3 wheeler that you cant find parts anywhere. I have 1 out of 2 runable tecates. Im only into the r for that much anyways. I am hopping to get the better deal.
Thanks for the replys.

you'll be hard pressed to find many new parts for the 85-86 lt250r. They are the least popular because you are so limited in the power you can get out of them.
