What is the best power gain for a 97 300ex for less than $500 dollars

what have you done to it already? do you have the air filter, exhaust and jets done yet? that would be my guess. you can get a big bore kit for under 500 but its not much good until you have the stuff I mentioned above.

yeah a uni/k&N filter, jets, and a full exhaust system will give you the best gains for 500 bucks.

Do you think Big Gun Evo R exhaust is a good choice.

And where is a good place to buy a Big Bore Kit for under $500 bucks cuz i have a knocking noise in motor and smokes so that's why im trying to find one. Plus i want it on pump gas.

I'm not sure what gas you need for that but I'm sure you have to modify your cases for that kit. you need a 313

If you don't want to have the cases machined. Or take a dremel tool to the cases like the people selling the kits on eBay suggest then Powroll makes a 319 kit that will work on stock cases. You can get it in lower compression ratios to stay with pump gas also.
But it costs more than the eBay 330 kits.

So after buying the kit I have to what after that. I'm good at fixing a lot of stuff but when it comes to fixing motor i have a lil trouble. So first i need to take it to a atv shop and let them find a diagnostics for it and see if i can slide around the knocking noise and save some $$$ to buy the Big Bore

Thanks

And I relay wont to do just like he is doing

{I have just acquired a 300ex project and was looking for some advice on a motor build. Not a race motor just a good build for woods riding, playing and would like it to still be reliable. anyone have a good setup that they would be willing to share? not wanting to wrap up a ton of $$ because it's not my pimary bike. it is still stock bore with a cobra exhaust and uni filter. Any suggestions would be appreciated.}

Got any ideas

Id say forget about this big bore. Boring is not on the top of the list of power gains.
I would say, exhaust, filter... then you can go with a cam, and/or a higher compression piston, then valves and porting.

How much you do at once is all up to the pocket book. $500 you might be able to do an exhaust, filter & cam that would be a sweet setup and easy install just have to open up the valve cover. if you go with an aggressive cam you might need someone to install stiffer springs on your valves, but its worth it.
