View Full Version : Head torque specs for the differant gaskets?

Hi guys I just finished my top end rebuild.
on my 88R (stock cylinder). I have a oem head gasket and I am planning on just running the middle metal part of the gasket as I was told this should be good for 200lbs compression. I am runnning 100 octane fuel. I am either going to use hylomar (german rtv type product used for all gaskets on rolls royces). or copper spray a gasket.. But what should I use for a torque spec on just a metal gasket?

I could use a 89 cr head gasket if I wanted but I want the most compression i can get.

I just went thru the same thing with a .060 Wiseco piston & porting. I took apart a replacement 250r gasket, and used just one of the thinner parts. From all I've read, copper spray gasket is the stuff to use- Permatex- I got it at AutoZone. It worked great. Spray on both sides, wait 5min or so, give it a 2nd coat and put it together. 250r shop manual says 17-21ft/lbs torque for head studs. I went with 20.

With my combination, I checked my compression with the thin gasket and it was 190-195psi; it's not fully broken in yet either. I would guess that using either both thin ones or the thick ctr. portion would be slightly lower compression. Based on mixed opinions, I'm running a 50/50 mix of 110 and premium pump gas.

Those pieces are there for a reason. I tried this and it leaked when i ran just the middle piece, and when i sprayed them down and everything.

Just get the cr head gasket, just taking the 2 thin pieces off the head gasket wont raise your comp more than 5 pounds. When i measured mine with a micrometer. The thickness changed VERY little. I did not notice ANY change in compression.

Three Bond brand, #1211 sealant.
Once you go Three Bond, you'll never go back to anything else.

Neil, can you use this sealant on a Cometic gasket? Where can
you purchase this sealant? Thanks.

i dont know why you would want to use it on a cometic gasket. lol

hell no! you dont need sealant on any gasket! gaskets are there to seal! you dont need to add extra crap.

Well, depends.
If you just had both mating surfaces of the head & cylinder machined & know they are perfactly flat, then probably no need to apply any sealant, but, if it is a big bore sleeved 250R cylinder, I would put sealant on that head gasket reguardless if it has been machined or not.

I use Three Bond sealant on every new gasket I install. Just makes for a whole lot less trouble from not having to chase down air leaks.

I have re-used a CR thin head gasket several time just by using the Three Bond 1211 sealant.

Also when i attempt to reuse head gaskets i torque them tighter than the factory settings. Instead of 20-25 which i believe is facroty, i go to 30-32.

Dont go over 35 or you will risk stripping the nuts, i torued to 40 foot pounds one time and it held but im never doin that again.

yep she was all good. held 6 pounds for 10 minutes.
