I'm still trying to decide which exhaust to throw on my quad. Does anyone care to throw in their two cents?

Here's what I've eliminated so far...

HMF - Too loud
Sparks - Too expensive
White Brothers - Discontinued, too hard to find in good shape
Pro Circuit - Belongs on a Kawasaki
Yoshimura - They belong on Suzukis ;)
Lexx - Just don't like the looks
Phoenix - Don't know enough about them
Jardine - Don't trust 'em

Here's what I'm still looking at...

LRD - These seem decent, but very few run them
Motoworks - Same as above(see LRD)
Two Brothers - Loud out of the box, but can be made quiet w, tip
FMF - Too comercialized?

ive got an fmf slip on for my 03. it sounds good at idle, even at light throttle its good, and from the vids ive seen mine seems to have a bit more of a deep sound than other exhausts. but its still got a bit of rasp to it. i suppose they all will but im just not a fan of it. other than that low throttle idle mid way through the rpm its pretty good.

i got a DG krome lite race series slip on and love it
it did wonders for my low end torque
its the one that takes disks like a supertrapp
im running 4 disk and its legal
just my .02 cents
good luck and happy shopping

My buddy has a LRD full system and he loves it and it sounds real nice and deep to, but not too loud and annoying

I've already eliminated HMF and Sparks. They're both too loud for my taste.

Another question... If I add a slip on and jet accordingly, am I going to have to re-jet again when I swap my air filter for a Sparks or Uni?

I'm pinching pennies and have just enough coin for a slip-on, but not a filter, at the moment.

I love my HMF....it can be made deeper and less raspy with a fmf powerbomb header...but I know that costs money. And you should really get a filter to throw on when you add that exhaust...then jet it

Ok, I just dug out the credit card and picked up a Sparks air filter and I already have the jets I'll need, soooooo...

I guess it's time to **** or get off the pot... I need to pick an exhaust, lol.

You've really cut down on some of the best choices. Motoworks seem to be a hot item on the 450's, but not many people run them on the 400's from what I've seen. LRD's shop is about 20 minutes from my pad, and they've always been helpful, and I've got a friend that has one on his 400, and he's been satisfied with it.

Really truly though, HMF and Sparks are typically regarded as your best performance and quality line of pipes (with Yoshi, FMF, LRD being a second tier product). That being said, I've got an entry level Yoshi, and have been very satisfied with it. However, I'd upgrade to a Sparks in a moments notice if I could.

My advice, save another $100 or so, and get the Sparks. You can watch and hear youtube video's of all the different exhausts, if sound is an issue.

You should understand that all exhaust brands are loud depending on if they have a quiet core in, or are their choked up quiet exhaust model in that case might as well stick with stock.

HMF exhuast are approx 102db open. With quiet core insert approx 96db

LRD exhuast are 100 dB. But they offer a quiet core that quiets it down to 97dB

FMF have some of the loudest exhaust I have ever heard. But they offer quiet exhaust models

Motoworks I have no experience with

Not true, there are several full motoworks on ebay.

I'm only looking for a slip-on, at the moment. I'll either pick up an FMF Powerbomb later, or sell the slip-on on ebay and pick up a full system.

My bro in LAW and cousin both run HMF I run White Brothers there bikes are actually a deeper tone and quieter than my white bros.

HMF is the way to go they are not as loud as you think.

I guess I've just heard a lot of people here complain about how loud the HMF is. Can it really be brought down to the 96dB range with a quiet core?

The quiet core does work but in my opinion it doesn't sound near as good...

Does anyone know the noise level, in dB, of the Two Bros slip-on?

I see the P3 tip will quiet it 6-8dB, but nowhere can I find how loud it is to begin with.

If it lowers it to about 92 dB's i would say it is about 97dB without the tip. I think that i read that is what it lowers it to. I am not exactly sure though, steve

HMF and Sparks are not that loud. I personally think Procircuit and LRD are louder than those. And yes I have had a Procircuit on a 400ex. It was alot louder than my X6

coryatver
05-10-2009, 03:06 PM
yeah I had a pro circuit also. A lot louder than HMF. And the HMF gave me more power

Ok guys, IF I were to choose HMF, which is the more durable finish, brushed or polished?

I'm reconsidering HMF and still thinking about Motoworks and Two Brothers.

I would get brushed over polished as to me polished is just to shiny lol.

But HMF offeres them pre powder coated as well in many color choices.

i bought an HMF thinking it was going to be real loud so i bought the quiet core, but when i bought i ran it without the quiet core and thought that ain't so bad. so then i put the core in and immediately took it out. it sounds like crap and i just though without it wasn't that loud. i think there the best for the price and they look sick.

What about lexx? I have been considering them mostly because of the price point but how much of a gain do they give?

I guess I don't really care how loud it is, personally. I just don't want to risk a ticket, although I've never heard of anyone getting one.

Why is it that I'm legally limited to 94dB on the trails, away from everybody, but my neighbor can fire up his obnoxious Harley at 2:00am and wake everyone in the neighborhood? Doesn't make sense...

Check out this thread, a bunch of us posted what kind of exhausts we had with clips of how they sound. This might help you out.
