why can you not run a long rod crank? I thought the only difference was the 5 speed tranny, good Q.

All are 6 speeds, you can use all parts, even the crank if you use a piston for the short rod.The 85-86 engines are the same all over.87-89 used the longer rod and 88-89 had different gear ratios for 5th and 6th.

actually the first run of 85 motors did only have 5 speeds. That series of motors is very rare. I read about it in 2 other places and a shop owner confirmed it. I read about it on 3ww ~4 years ago. The guy that started the thread used to flat track race his atc250r in 85, he got back into the sport and bought another atc250r and was suprised to find 6 speeds.

Interesting,if this is true, then I will rebut my earlier post and will take this stance, all 86-89 and MOST 85's are 6 speeds.Anyone have info on the 5 speed water cooled engines?

the guys that had 5 speed 250r motors thought that they were better and you were always in the "zone". Maybe they had a close ratio tranny? I wonder where to find more info about this. Everything I read was from another person, maybe I'll email Mike Coe and ask him about it. He knows just about everything concerning 83-87 atc's, the rare factory parts and works projects that most people would never be able to get.

a 5 speed? Take that motor out, put it in a box. and save it. IT will be worth a mint someday. if not already!!!
