well finally got around to finishing the ramp we started making back over winter.

i need to finish painting it, but its ready to go now. the plywood surface isn't final. its just there untill i find some sheet metal/grate mesh for a solid surface.

now to build a landing...with shovels:o

what you fellas think?

That's pretty sick! Should make a real fun ramp to hit.

Well..I'm not a "fella" :D

..But I sure do think it looks rad.

Now to post pics of you using it! Congrats on the build!!!

According to the CAD program I use at school, you need to add braces in a few places (red lines).

It showed all of these being stress points that would fail when I made the ramp in the program..

I only did one side, but you get the point... another hour or 2 of welding and you wouldnt ever even have to think twice about it.

Triangles are your friend when you are building for strength.

I would go with what he said and add a few more braces in there.

The amount of braces I drew are probably overkill, but I dont take chances with my safety.

You really need to brace the back (tallest open section), and the more open panels on the side.

As the ramp gets shorter (closer to the ground) it isnt such a big deal, but im going to guess that you didnt use tubing, maybe just peices of angle iron or flat metal.

I can see rebar, which isnt a great ramp building material.

If you could plate the face with expanded metal, that would help alot...

Which 450?

that looks extremely weak. Maybe good for a rc car.

i can see what your saying but its only for pit bikes. i might add some gussets if you will, to most of the areas where the pieces meet. and probly end up putting 2 cross pieces in the back.

also need to probably build a little mechanizm that will drop on the ground, or a "steak" system. steak it down to the ground. it'll probably roll a little on those wheels

the wheels are only on to pull around the yard or wherever it is lol. i just take them off where ever its gonna be planted. i was thinking about something like that anyways though..

I dont think you understand the force that its going to be holding up to.

Let me put it this way.

When you run, you put 4x your body weight down in force every step. Thats just with your foot.

That bike weighs 140lbs, maybe. Hit the ramp at 20mph, thats WELL over 1000lbs in force, from the bike alone..

Your going to need more bracing..

And deff. some form of system to tie it into the ground. Maybe get 4 U-bolts like you would attach a leaf spring to a rear end housing with, grind the ends sharp with a barb, and drive them in with a 4lb sledge.

Just giving you some food for thought, and trying to keep you out of the ER. If you dont brace it, I wanna see the video...

ill show ya the video either way.. should be funny braced or not haha

and i will probly make some sort of steak system, but this thing is HEAVY... i honestly dont see it moving when its in place and pulled down

Maybe you should try it on a bicycle first...

when u hit kickers your basically goin into a wall fullspeed your gona wanna add alot more support and something in the back so it dont move and FYL. ifnot please video the first attempt haha.

My friend has wooden ones and they move wen hitting them. Safety is key .

haha i could see why! lol. i built a aluminum mini kicker for my backyard a few months ago, and with all the aluminum, it was SOO lite! you could pick the whole thing up by your self. then i put the ply-wood top on it and the ply-wood weighed more then the hole ramp. lol. but ya, i wana see some video or pics when you hit it. i wana get a pit bike soon so i might build one like it.

That looks scary:eek2: Props to you for having the guts to go that big!

i hope you used plans...because that looks much too short and steep for even a 50.....its either going to tip over or your going to be in the air nose low......looks dangerous too me, ive hit ramps on minis before , i dont think id hit that for safety reasons

this ramp is no where near as steep as yours and im only jumping about a 10-12 ft distance

screw it bro. i'll hit that thing with ya. we'll go to the ER together:devil:

well a few things here.

it looks alot steeper since its on a small incline, and the wheels are on..

and the first time i hit it will be like a few feet if that from the landing, just to feel it and i will work it back to a comfortable gap.

if it is to steep ill probly cut a foot off the top and go from there..

its not really a big deal i don't plan on nailing this thing all the time and going huge. i just got some free re-bar and decided to throw something together with some friends that we could experiment with
