Ok, Back to Jetting 101...

My Jet kit won't be here till next week, and my dumbass dealer is having issues getting my cam and 416 kit.

So I have this 400EX with no snorkle and an E-Series Pipe.

I DO have a #42 Pilot jet. Should I bother to swap this in before I ride this weekend, or ride anyways and wait till next week when I can get everything done? What about moving the Clip to the 4th down? Do both or do neither?

Thanks!

Go riding or whatever for now and leave the jetting the way it is. Tell the dealer to give your money back for the cam/416 kit and take it to get a 39MM FCR carb. Now you're kickin' butt without tearing the motor apart and no down time.

I haven't paid for crap yet, just the K&N Jet kit.

What's the general concensus on the performance gains? I ordered a Hotcam and 416 kit, then ordered the K&N from Moto-man, so it's on it's way.

Would replacing the carb show similar gains as the piston and cam? I can't imagine it would:confused:

Hmm, what's a Carb cost?

people say the carb does a lot. the 39fcr is a great carb. i heard it does as much as a cam and high comp piston would do.

well that is good to hear because i just got off the phone with sparks and ordered a FCR 39. By the way dester400ex the carb costs 450.

You'll love the FCR carb, it makes very big difference but I think you'd need the motor work to really take advantage of the larger carb. I put a 425 kit (11:1), XR400 cam, and ported it before getting the carb. I noticed a great increase with just the piston and work then adding the carb put the icing on the cake!

Ride with the 42,, thats a very good needle size,,, Wait till you put the 416 with the cam,,, its impressive,,, mines only a 406 11:1, DMC's, Qwicksilver Carb, and Stage 1 HOTCAM.. and its POWERFULL,,, sorry about the argument with ya on the other thread too,,, If your bike runs good now ,, keep it like it is until you get your 416 in...

It's cool man. Thanks for the input. Are you happy with the stage 1 cam? I was looking at the stage 2, but "heard" that the stage 2 had less low-end torq, which is where a lot of my riding takes place.

Oh, and yeah my junk runs, but it's gotta be way lean and it's pops quite a bit on decel...

Thanks again!

my 416 and cam was like 400 so thats cheaper than the carb. took me two days. now when i add the carb it will be that much better. my bud has a white bros all around and mine pulls so much harder, he is on a stock bore wiseco high comp though

mine pulls harder especially up top

i gained low, didn't lose low

Your thinking is correct. Not so much that the stage1 has more but the stage2 does loose some torque in the lower rpms.

If you want to keep more of the bottom grunt and still get the gains of the mid-top of the stage2 you will need to up the compression a little.

look around the powertrain forum as there is some more indepth info on some older threads.

as with what 440 said i went to a high comp piston at the same time i added the cam, i wouldnt reccomend a cam without a piston

Well, when I ordered my stuff, I ordered the 416 (11:1) piston kit, and the Hotcam Stage 1 (Not 2 for fear of loosing some bottom end).

I ordered from another place (moto-man) the K&N Power Kit which is already on it's way, so I can't really cancel it, and therefore I thinkn I"m going to stick with my original plan to do internal motor work, then external (carb) at some later date.

Thanks for the info!

I sure wish there was a website for Hotcams. Does anyone have a phone number for them?

You should have tons of torque if you do that setup,, Thats what I have,, but with a new carb and pipes,, and it pulls very strong in the low RPM's,,, I love it though in the woods..
