View Full Version : 87 sliping out of 5th gear

i just got an 87 250r and it slips out of 5th gear, it goes in but once i start to give it some gas it goes into nuetral and then even with the clutch in it grinds and wont go back in quickly, but i can shift into 6th fine.

If you haven't already, please stop running the engine. Something is broken and needs to be taken apart and fixed. It shouldn't be hard to figure out the problem once inside though. If you have broken dogs and loose metal in there, bearings are probably recommended. An inspection of the teeth too and shearing surface tolerances should give you peace of mind when it goes back together.

yeah i dont have time to pull the engine apart yet but i will soon, is it possible that the shift drum is worn out?

sounds like the 5th gear side of the dog or the "receiving" side of 5th or both are worn. it also could be the shift fork. a teardown is deffinately in store. keep us updated. :cool:
