Round number six of the Can Am GNCC Series head back to Tennessee as we headed to Lafayette/Westmoreland (They were arguing about that so I will cover my bases!)

This region is smack dab in the middle of god's country and is filled with rolling hills, valleys and mountains that formed a spectacular backdrop for the race. Unfortunatley, none of us got to see much of it due to the rain that hammered the area friday and saturday morning.

Stepping out of my RV at 7 am to cover the Youth race, this is what greeted me and the many racers and fans that were now looking at the first full on mud raceof 2009.

I admit it, I almost turned back around and stayed inside to pray for the rain to stop:p After last season and shooting in the rain, I have become spoiled with drier conditions.

From the grumblings I heard on the way to the starting line, I wasn't alone in my thinking:blah:

Pappy
05-03-2009, 08:54 PM
Groups of umbrella monsters clammered around devouring wet little children mauahahhaha:blah: Sorry, but from the looks of things, I couldn't resist:D

Pappy
05-03-2009, 09:03 PM
Now I havent been cruising the starting line like I have in years past as I usually find myself doing all I can to drag my sorry rear out of the fartsack and make it to the line before the kids rip past turn one:p However seeing I was in need of shelter, anyone with a Brolly (Thats photog speak for Umbrella:o ) I sauntered the line looking for that free 4 or 5 seconds needed to catch a dry break and wipe off a camera or two.

So, there I am on the prowl when I spotted this little sweetheart that was missing her arm from the elbow down. I started chatting with her dad and asked how it came to be, when she said a photographer asked her a question and she ripped it off and beat him to death with it:eek: I am just kidding ofcourse, and was informed she was born that way. I always take a special interest in riders with disabilities because I can't ride with everything god gave me so I know these folks have some serious dedication when you see them on a quad entered in a race! My heart ofcourse went out to her but within seconds of striking up a conversation, I realized she was more then capable of handling that machine and was a pure pleasure to chat with.

They had added a modified bar to allow her to control that side and watching her ride left no doubt that all her crew needed to do was cheer her on, she had everything else handled!!! I hope she makes it to the next few rounds and I can find her friday evening because I would love to do a photoshoot with her and let her tell her racing stories for everyone to eventually read!

Pappy
05-03-2009, 09:06 PM
I hear folks complain about all sorts of things on their atv....but I dont think she would ever mutter a peep because she is out there to do her best with whatever set up she has......think about that the next time you whine about your stabilizer being to stiff;)

Pappy
05-03-2009, 09:07 PM
God gives us nothing we can't handle is what I have always been told. Tara, if you get to read this, you just keep living your life with that big smile on your face, everything else is petty beyond your spirit!

Pappy
05-03-2009, 09:09 PM
Now looking at her smile for one last pic was all I needed to keep me charged up for the entire day! I was ready to tromp through the mud and rain and get my job done and would be doing my best to keep an eye out for Tara!

Pappy
05-03-2009, 09:18 PM
The 2008 season flat sucked for these guys as it rained at so many rounds and didn't usually stop until they saw the checkered flag. From years racingw ith my own son in the slop...everyone has to race the same track and it was time to ruck up, gear up and get ready to battle!

Pappy
05-03-2009, 09:21 PM
I trotted off (thats trotted, a slow gaited run....do NOT listen to Jeremie Dudding who insisted I was in fact skipping:grr: :blah: ) off to my chosen spot to capture these rascals rip apart the first few turns!

Super Mini would fire off the line first and it would be Austin Findley grabbing the holeshot on his ultra trick TRX90 based racer!

Pappy
05-03-2009, 09:23 PM
Levi Coen takes a look back to see where Ryan Earley was as Earley was very slow firing off the line.

Pappy
05-03-2009, 09:24 PM
Earley was coming and the trio set off to settle their scores on the water logged course.

Pappy
05-03-2009, 09:26 PM
90 Mod came sliding around the first turn and it was Gage Rickman in charge!

Pappy
05-03-2009, 09:28 PM
Justin Hess was pouring on the power as he headed for turn two!

Pappy
05-03-2009, 09:30 PM
90 Limited's Superstar Jay Shadron jumped out front and was well on his way of doing what he does best, hunting down the overall leaders:macho

Pappy
05-03-2009, 09:38 PM
90 Mod 8-11

Nicholas Mcready would grab the holeshot as water was really shedding off the racers as they passed me!

Pappy
05-03-2009, 09:39 PM
Roll Off's, Tear Off's...I dont think anything would help:p

Pappy
05-03-2009, 09:42 PM
Tristan Garrett would be your holeshot winner in 90 Limited 8-11!

Pappy
05-03-2009, 09:43 PM
70 CVT

Thomas Owen would be railing the first turn and grabs the holeshot!

Pappy
05-03-2009, 09:44 PM
Charlie Welch had already found out that this volume of water and goggles dont work well:p

Pappy
05-03-2009, 09:45 PM
Sadie Welch's new colors were really standing out!

Pappy
05-03-2009, 09:47 PM
Kaley Olivers second ever GNCC would be nasty and wet:p

Pappy
05-03-2009, 09:48 PM
Everyone made their way to different parts of the course to watch the action and keep an eye on their young racer!

Pappy
05-03-2009, 09:50 PM
Austin Findley would suffer a DNF as he pushes his ride off the track:(

Pappy
05-03-2009, 09:52 PM
Gianni Cibella rips up a hill as the racers work out fo a woods section

Pappy
05-03-2009, 09:53 PM
The rain kicked back up and the leaves offered little protection as Ryan Earley heads in to score lap 1

Pappy
05-03-2009, 09:55 PM
Shadron had already rocketed his way to within sight of the the overall leader!

Pappy
05-03-2009, 09:56 PM
The field sections were slick as all get out, however the woods would be fairly good for the Youth racers. It would be the water that did many a mini in.

Pappy
05-03-2009, 09:58 PM
Making a new line is all in a days work!:D

Pappy
05-03-2009, 10:00 PM
Many of the mini's would limp in, sputtering from the wet conditions. For some, the race would only last a lap or two

Pappy
05-03-2009, 10:02 PM
Tara Dunaway pulls in for some gas and would soon be back out there ripping it up!

Pappy
05-03-2009, 10:05 PM
Hang loose:D

Pappy
05-03-2009, 10:06 PM
Levi Coen was flyin, and he would have to keep the pace up if he wanted to stay ahead of Earley!

Pappy
05-03-2009, 10:07 PM
Shadron has smarts...racing smarts. I watched him stay out of the mud at every oppertunity as he continued closing in on the overall leader!

Pappy
05-03-2009, 10:08 PM
Sadie Welch would put in 2 laps today before the conditions cut her race short

Pappy
05-03-2009, 10:15 PM
Sliding is alot of fun...and I am pretty sure I saw a smile or two under all that mud:D

Pappy
05-03-2009, 10:16 PM
Getting towed in sucks!

Pappy
05-03-2009, 10:25 PM
Levi Coen would be the first to see the checkered flag, as he took the Super Mini class win. Ryan Earley and Austin findley sat sidelined as Coen rode to an unchallenged victory, and now it was time to see if Jay Shadron could come in and take the overall away from him!

Pappy
05-03-2009, 10:26 PM
Shadron would indeed come in and with time adjustment snatch the overall win away from Coen! This marks the second time this season Shadron has rallied from a few rows back to run down the big boys!

Pappy
05-03-2009, 10:28 PM
I made my way to the podium to await the riders as others did all they could to walk around. I was hoping these young ladies wouldnt fall and break into an impromtu mud wrestling kind of thing:chinese:  :D

Pappy
05-03-2009, 10:29 PM
Jay Shadron took his spot as the overall winner of the Titan!

Pappy
05-03-2009, 10:31 PM
Two class wins in a row for Coen. the points battle between Coen and Earley will heat up as the season moves forward!

Pappy
05-03-2009, 10:33 PM
An outstanding performance from Brayden Schick!! Brayden not only scored his 3rd straight win, but I do believe this is his first top 3 overall? Excellent job Brayden!

Pappy
05-03-2009, 10:52 PM
The morning racers are usually on the line before we clear the youth podium so a brisk walk is in order at most rounds:p There wouldn't be anything brisk this round unless you found yourself slipping:D

Once we reached the starting line, it was easy to see that everyone had done what they could to help shed mud and water. A light rain continued to fall as we awaited the start.

Pappy
05-03-2009, 10:53 PM
Just keeping things as dry as possible before the start took some ingenuity:D

Pappy
05-03-2009, 10:57 PM
Traci Cecco's machine donned the duct tape in an effort to keep things mud free. Cecco has made a switch to Housers Tric-Trac upper arms in an effort to correct a steering issue they feel the 2009 model has. Her first place finish at Lorettas showed that the change has made a difference and she was pretty stoked to get back out there and repeat!

Pappy
05-03-2009, 10:59 PM
The clouds had darkened and it appeared we were in for another round of heavy rain just prior to the start. I waspretty ticked honestly, this track IMO would be an outstanding course to photograph if the sun had been out:(

Pappy
05-03-2009, 11:02 PM
With gear getting wet, I vacated the starting line and stayed as dry as possible until the start. 4x4 open would get the go ahead as teh green flag waved and it would be Scott Kilby claiming the holeshot!

Pappy
05-03-2009, 11:04 PM
The youth riders hadn't torn up the start to bad but the big quads would shred it!

Pappy
05-03-2009, 11:07 PM
The tall grass would not last long:p

Pappy
05-03-2009, 11:12 PM
The ladies of the GNCC would get to tackle the Tennesse track next and it would be Angel Atwell grabbing the holeshot!

Pappy
05-03-2009, 11:14 PM
Traction was almost non existant and noone wanted to make a bad move

Pappy
05-03-2009, 11:21 PM

Jesi Stracham was off to a great start!

Pappy
05-04-2009, 12:02 AM
Rick Cecco was moving out, but I had a feeling he would keep things real and try not to wad himself up and just go for a solid finish in these conditions

Pappy
05-04-2009, 12:04 AM
Glen Pritchard on the move yet again!

I heard his buddies switched his Viagra for pep pills and they cant slow him down:eek:  :blah: 5 class wins in a row and looking for more:macho

Pappy

Bryan Buckhannon would greet the checkered flag first, securing his class win. We would all wait and see how close Cecco could make it.

Pappy
05-04-2009, 01:00 AM
Cecco would cross the line but it wouldnt be enough to take the overall. Now it was time to see who would claim the final podium spot!

That spot would fall to Micheal Swift and by time adjustment he would overtake Cecco for the 2nd overall position!

Pappy
05-04-2009, 01:03 AM

David Bullard would jump to the early lead

Pappy
05-04-2009, 09:03 AM
Fred Mudd pulls a strong second off the start and would have a great race!

Hey Fred, are you related to Dr. Samuel Mudd? The doctor who set John Wilkes Booth's leg after he killed Lincoln?

Pappy
05-04-2009, 09:08 AM
With the racers all on the course, I took up a vantage point and awaited their passage:p Looks liek someone found a souvenier:p

Pappy
05-04-2009, 09:10 AM
Finally the sound of the leader could be heard hard on the throttle as he exited the woods. I could tell it was a Can Am rider but it was only after he passed that I saw it was Brent Sturdivant!

Pappy
05-04-2009, 09:10 AM
It wasn't a big surprise that Johnny G was in second, the man loves the stuff wet and slick!

Pappy
05-04-2009, 09:12 AM
Chris Borich rounded out the top 3 and them boys were rollin'!

Pappy
05-04-2009, 09:18 AM
Wlaker Fowler was already missing a mud gaurd but the boy was haulin' teh mail. He was running WAY upfront in the overall order and had a healthy lead on his class

Pappy
05-04-2009, 09:20 AM
Dave Simmons still out front and he would remain there, securing his 5th class win of the season!

Pappy
05-04-2009, 09:22 AM
Jamie Bithell was rolling strong and was running 2nd in class as lap two got underway!

Pappy
05-04-2009, 09:25 AM
I was hoping to catch some battles in the corners but everyone came through single file as bottlenecks had riders getting spread out as they filed through the woods.

AJ Koontz was running pretty strong but would run into some issues as the race wore on.

Pappy
05-04-2009, 09:26 AM
Belbeck exits the woods as I head to a new section to see what I can find.

Pappy
05-04-2009, 09:31 AM
I barely had a chance to find a spot when the leaders came past. McGill had found the lead and was looking pretty solid

Pappy
05-04-2009, 09:36 AM
The timing couldn't been worse as my flash batteries decided to bail on me as the XC1 class charged through the section:p

Duane Johnson would be the rider I lit up after making a swap. Johnson was running in the 8th spot

Pappy
05-04-2009, 09:37 AM
XC2 rider Brian Wolf was well inside the top 10 overall as he powered forward!

Pappy
05-04-2009, 09:53 AM
Ballance was having issues and is shown here running in 12th

Pappy
05-04-2009, 09:54 AM
McClure would settle in around the 10th spot and didn't seem to eb able to make up any ground at this event

Pappy
05-04-2009, 09:55 AM
Chris Bithell would succumb to mechanical issues yet again as he scored 1 lap of competition this round.

Pappy
05-04-2009, 09:56 AM
Nottman wouldnt have a good day either as he was towed back into the pits

Pappy
05-04-2009, 09:58 AM
Fowler was on fire as he opened up a 4 minute + lead on 2nd place Jamie Bithell. I haven't heard yet what actually happened to his Yamaha, but I caught a glimpse of him being towed off the track.

Pappy
05-04-2009, 09:59 AM
XC2 racer Josh Kirkland found himself in 6th after lap 1, and continued to put his head down and ride smart as he started picking up positions!

Pappy
05-04-2009, 10:01 AM
Kirkland wasn't the only XC2 rider on the move as Parker Jones was riding pretty smooth and very smart

Pappy
05-04-2009, 10:03 AM
Once Fowler was off the track, the door was wide open for a hard charging Jamie Bithell to take the College A win!

Pappy
05-04-2009, 10:06 AM
I was so down because of the conditions. The cows had the woods fairly clean and I was so ticked to have to rely on a single flash:(

Im covering this race next year no matter what the boss says and if it is sunny, I will be one happy rascal:p

Pappy
05-04-2009, 10:11 AM
Lines were opening up everywhere

Pappy
05-04-2009, 10:13 AM
Most lines didn't offer any big advantage over the other, but it was a chance to make a pass if you could hang on to it:p

Pappy
05-04-2009, 10:14 AM
Wassup Dawg:D

Pappy
05-04-2009, 10:15 AM
Glenn McConnell would ride to a 3rd place finish in Senior A

Pappy
05-04-2009, 10:17 AM
Shawn Javens on his way to another Senior B win!

Pappy
05-04-2009, 10:18 AM
Traction wasn't a big problem in most woods sections, but ruts and kickers would make for some challenging racing

Pappy
05-04-2009, 10:23 AM
Kiser would snatch the lead and now it would be on him to put some distance between him and the rest of the XC1 class!

Pappy
05-04-2009, 10:24 AM
McGill was holding 2nd as he rocketed past me

Pappy
05-04-2009, 10:25 AM
Borich held 3rd as he drops into one of the large ruts that were forming all over the place

Pappy
05-04-2009, 10:26 AM
Mr. 4 leaf clover, Brent Sturdivants luck was holding as he ran in 4th.

Pappy
05-04-2009, 10:27 AM
Brandon Sommers round out the top 5 in XC1 as he too drops into the rut. The final stages of the race were starting to shape up as they headed out for lap 3!

Pappy
05-04-2009, 10:28 AM
Ockerman decided to just jump the rut:p

Pappy
05-04-2009, 11:01 AM
Gabe Phillips would hold the #2 spot in XC2 for the majority of the race.

Gabe was pretty stoked with the holeshot and almost met his goal of getting himself a podium spot!

"Well the race started out really good, I got the holeshot! When i was heading across the field section I looked backed to see who was on my tail and it was Brian Wolf. I just rode smart stayed out of the trees and picked good lines. About the end of the first lap I started up a hill and didnt make it and Wolf got around me. Wolf looked back and waved his arm lets go! From there on out we rode bar to bar the rest of the race until on the last lap with about 150 feet to go I ran out of gas and had to push my bike across the finish line and finished 4th.It was alot of fun riding with Brian hes a good guy and a great rider. I cant wait for Somerset. Hopefully pull another holeshot and stay towards the front...

Pappy
05-04-2009, 11:03 AM
Ryan Lane was off to a great start and was working his way into the top 10!

Pappy
05-04-2009, 11:05 AM
Bill Ballance just wasn't having a good day. I am pretty sure the reasoning lay in the machine because we all know Bill wont stop pushing if the problem was on him:p

Pappy
05-04-2009, 11:06 AM
Duane Johnson as well wasn't running as good as he has in the past several rounds. The conditions dictated caution and making up time would not be easy

Pappy
05-04-2009, 11:08 AM
McClure was chugging along and would stay around 10th all day.

Pappy
05-04-2009, 11:09 AM

Pappy

College B racer Cody Javens would put in a solid race and finish 4th

Pappy

Sore hands and beaten machines marked ths round as a bust for many

Pappy
05-04-2009, 11:17 AM
Video or Photographs just can't fully capture what these riders do. Kiser looses his grip on his bars as he pounds through a choppy corner. With 1 lap remaining, the race was his to loose!

Pappy
05-04-2009, 11:18 AM
Borich was in second and if he could make things happen, he would have 1 more lap to get it done

Pappy
05-04-2009, 11:19 AM
Kiser checks to see what kind of lead he had as he gets an eye full of Borich

Pappy
05-04-2009, 11:21 AM
1 turn behind, Borich sizes up Kiser

Pappy
05-04-2009, 11:22 AM
Brandon Sommers now is in the top 3 has he heads in to scoring. The leaders have 30 minutes to put in one last charge.

Pappy
05-04-2009, 11:24 AM
Sturdivant was having his best ride so far in 2009 and I only hoped his machine could hold up for one more lap and bring him in for a good finish that he desperately needed.

Pappy
05-04-2009, 11:27 AM
McGill has pulled off some last lap races in the past, and as he rides on, his dad keeps an eye on him and I know he had his fingers crossed as well.

Pappy
05-04-2009, 11:32 AM
Tyler Lenig was in the deep stuff:p

Pappy
05-04-2009, 11:35 AM
Xc2 racer Parker Jones would finally put together a solid race and grab the 3rd spot in XC2!

Pappy
05-04-2009, 11:36 AM
Fowler had a 4 minute lead on Bithell heading out for the last lap. This had to be a heart breaking loss when he broke down. Fowler would finish 6th in College A

Pappy
05-04-2009, 11:42 AM
Taylor Kiser pumps his fist as he would claim the win! This was a big win for Kiser and he was stoked to have pulled it off!

Pappy
05-04-2009, 11:46 AM
Borich and Kiser had one last look as the pair mirrored their way through the last few laps, and I saw Borich nod to Kiser. This was some great racing and to see them battle so hard was almost worth forever changing the color of my boots:D

Chris Borich would cruise in taking the 2nd position

Pappy
05-04-2009, 11:47 AM
Brandon Sommers would be back on the podium at this round as he claimed the final position!

Pappy
05-04-2009, 11:48 AM
Don Ockerman would also have a solid race as he takes the 4th spot

Pappy
05-04-2009, 11:50 AM
Brent Sturdivant was close this round. On the last lap, with Sommers in his sights, his chain derailed. Brent was able to get the chain back on and would finish 5th!

Pappy
05-04-2009, 11:56 AM
Sommers finish would stick him 5th in points and generate some momentum as this marks 2 consecutive rounds the young Pro would pay a visit to the podium!

Pappy
05-04-2009, 11:59 AM
Chris Borich needed this finish in a bad way, after a broken chain sent him way back at round #5. The points battle just heated up!

Pappy
05-04-2009, 12:00 PM
Privateer Taylor Kiser stands tall once again as he claims his second overall of the season. The boy is focused and will be a handfull if he can keep his solid finishes rolling!

Pappy
05-04-2009, 12:02 PM
There ya have it folks, the top 3 racers of round #6! Things should be off the chain as we head to the rocky and rough course in Somerset PA in two weeks! Thats Borich country and you know he will be pulling no punches as he goes for a win on his home turf!

Pappy
05-04-2009, 12:03 PM

Pappy
05-04-2009, 12:06 PM
Josh Kirkland was back on the podium for another round as he kept the KTM fans cheering. Kirkland is having a stellar season and it will be an awesome battle in this class as the points stay so close!

Pappy
05-04-2009, 12:07 PM
Brian Wolf has the points lead in XC2 and this win marks his 3rd straight!

John Bowers makes off with the cash that McClure garnered for the holeshot. McClure whipped into his pit after the race and had to rush out to catch a plane so that he could get to Arizona in time to compete in the WORCS Series event on sunday. Jarrod went on to find teh podium out west by placing 3rd!

This is awesome. I know how it is to race with a disability as well, and how tough it can be at times. Congrats to her, and I wish her the best of luck.

Thanks Pappy for what you do for these kids and our sport. Tara (one arm bandit) Dunaway is my daughter and she was so excited that you put her in your postings. There is nothing she likes more than racing her quad and meating people at the track. Also want to say thank you to everyone who comes up and talk to her about riding because she enjoys people. The GNCC community has been great for her we have meet some really awsome families in the youth ranks that have given us some advice the last few weeks that has helped greatly, so thanks to everyone. Once again from a pround fathers stand point thanks Pappy and everyone at the races for making my daughter feel like a champ. Just seeing the pics for this round makes me want to put my MX 450r up for sale. Awesome coverage as always.

What happened to Cody after last year, I raced back and forth with him in Somerset on a borrowed quad last year, and haven't seen him since?

Pappy
05-06-2009, 12:25 PM
Codys knee was still bothering him. It's not due to the break, it was due to the growth plate and the hardware. Doc advised us to let it rest as much as possible or he would have to remove the plate. So thats pretty much what we have done all fall and winter and now spring haha.

He has been doing alot of weight lifting and getting back in shape, and as soon as I get some good shocks on hos quad he will be back out starting to rebuild himself. I am pretty sure he wants to run Yadkinville, Powerline and Dilla but it will be just for fun. Next year is still aways off so we will see.
