Hey guys, i installed a JE piston in my buddies 400ex about 2 months ago. 2 weeks ago the rod snapped, looking at everything i see that the bottom of the piston hit the crankshaft. it acually made it crack below the wrist pin. has anyone heard of this before? i have heard of this on the yamaha YFZs with the first model JE pistons but never a 400ex?

are you sure that the crank is not a stroker crank? if its a hot rods stroker crank, it requires a stroker piston.

oh no its compeletly stock, it had a wiseco 11:1 stock bore piston in it. we had it professionally bored and honed when i installed the 416 piston. would the cometic base gasket be thinner than the stock one, causing the clearance to be tighter? i believe JE makes exellent pistons, its hard to believe a piston would be the cause of the problem.

The stock 400ex rod is known to snap with a high compression piston, so it may be damaged simply as a result of the rod snapping. Buy a HotRods or Carrillo rod and you'll never have to worry about it again:cool:

i have never heard of a rod snappin on a 400ex. but i guess this one did have a lot of time on it.
