Im looking at buying a 400ex with blaster engine in it. What are some things i should look for before i decide to buy it?? I like the idea of a 400ex with a 2-stroker in it. has a trx 250r fmf pipe renthal chain and spockets pro taper bars, pro disign kill switch,18" rear kenda klaws and 19" makkis razrs in front and maire race scooped hood

if it is a 240 it will straight up scream. but look for the way the engine is mounted, check for cracks on the mounts and stuff. test ride it and if it is fun then buy.

yeah you can never know what to expect when you buy somebody elses project.it could turn out to be more trouble than its worth. But on this one,if everything looks to be done cleanly and it runs good, there could be minimal risk. After all,the blaster motor has been the same for years so its not like you wont be able to track down parts, its not exactly a one off.Price should dictate on this one as long as it runs good.;)

At first, the thought of a blaster engine in a 400ex frame sounded like sacriledge...but the light weight has got to be a charm to throw around! I know going from my 400ex years ago to a 250r now was a night & day difference to me.

Now, I'll admit I'm not a Yamaha man, but I agree...the Blasters are as simple as it gets, easy to get parts for, and seem to be well proven and reliable as they come. I think every maker is plagued with a few bad apples. I've ridden a blaster a few times, not my first choice, but really fun little wheelers that you can really beat the tar out of.

I was once caught up in the mindset that 2 strokes were evil and had issues with mine in the past until I started to understand what made them tick. For the people that claim that 2 strokes aren't and never will be reliable, I think you have maintenance issues. Fouling plugs and melted pistons are a sure sign of 'poor housekeeping.' My friend's Banshee although not my favorite wheeler out there will sit and idle for a half an hour or more with very little smoke, rides out like the dickens, hardly EVER fouls plugs, and has been on the same top end since '99 still with great compression. My 250r will idle for ever too, has yet to foul a plug, always starts by the 3rd kick COLD, and the 2nd to 3rd gear shift on that thing is nutty!

It looks pretty sick in the pic, i love the pipe makes it look like a modern 250r IMO. I agree i had a blaster and rode the piss out of it, it was pretty reliable for the most part, it had to get rebuilt eventually but they all do. Also there easy to work on. If you get it and hate it later then just sell it.

It all depends on price you can get 400ex for 2000-3000 in good cond. You would spend that to get blaster to that level of performance, and it wouldn,t be as reliable.

i just baught it for a thousand bucks. its for my gf if she wants to learn to ride. I like it and the guy who built it said he will stand behind it he runs a repair and custom powersports shop. It was very nicely put together. Anywho it wont replace my main ride a REAL 2007 400ex. I wanted to just get her a blaster, but why when you can get a blaster powered 400ex with disc brakes and all around and better suspenion for cheaper.

yeah...picking it up one finger was kinda was pushing it. But it is considerably lighter then my 400ex. I got out to really ride it today, im very happy with it. It hauls accelerating, the top speed is much less then my 400. But its alot of fun driving it, ill get it out to the mx track this week and see how it does there.

Well thought i would post how the quad does on the track. I didnt get too crazy with it, I have a few things i want to check before i do. But the thing is crazy on the track. What little jumping i did scared me because it really didnt take much to send me flying off jumps. I let my buddy who normally rides his 450r ride it, he came back with a big O grin on his face. :D This Bike is a Keeper!:)

That lil sucker looks like it's nimble as hell, bet it's a blast at the track. Looks so much lighter with that motor. Throw a built 240 in that beast and you have a track monster.

I'm curious, side by side, how do they compare?

Which one handles better?
Which one has better acceleration?
Top speed?
More fun?

Handling goes to the blaster powered, the guy who built it setup the stock suspension spot on. The bike is so easy to manhandle.

The fastest accelerating is the blast again i think, im still not the best shifter. I grew driving four strokes this is a little different then my norms.

Top speed i think is the 400ex but ill get my buddy and we will drag race them.

The most fun? The blaster one is the one i like so far (not that 400ex is boring). But just because the 2 stroke powerband is awesome!

Here is the video of the startup
