I am wondering if anyone knows what the average oil temperature is when it enters the engine? If I understand this correct the oil comes out of the motor and goes into the cooler. It exits the cooler and enters into the top of the tank. It then exits the bottom of the tank and enters the motor. I am wanting to know the temperature of the oil as it leaves the tank and enters the engine. I will also settle on knowing what the temp is just sitting in the tank. Of course I would like to know both idle temp and hard riding temp.

I don't know if you can tell how much cooler the oils is coming out of the cooler.

I think what would matter is the tempature the oil breaks down at. I would think 250* and lower is great, 270* would be the very max temp- like give it a rest max., and 300* you got a problem.

So try and keep it <250*. ... I think.

Just get a DVOM with a temp wire on it. A good FLUKE will have it. tape it to the line and read the screen while riding and at idle. easy answer for a easy question.. Then you can tell us what the readings are...:p

Sand,
Thanks for the idea, but I already have a fluke and a dorec with K and J thermocouples. I am currently in the middle of a rebuild and was thinking of plumbing in a oil temp gauge between the tank and motor. I was also going to plumb in a temp switch and didnt know what N/O thermal on/off temp to get.

Whats a temp switch?

You could plumb in one of these... It dont read temps but helps keep em down. This is my bike...

Im basically looking for a temp switch just like you have in your car to turn your radiator fan on and off. This will control my cooling fans. I could leave them on all the time, but thought it might be nice to have "hands free mode".

I have about 200-240 in the tank. I have a xrsonly dipstick that i read this from. I run about 210 most of the time and have only seen 240 after someone else rode it. I dont have any problems with heat with my scoops. steve
