I'm looking to get a new quad here soon. My '05 TRX400EX has served me well, but I have grown out of it. At 6'5" 270lbs, I'm looking for something not only with power, but also something that will be a comfortable ride for me. I've been drooling over the 450R ever since it's release and have always told myself that it was going to be my next bike. Then the 700XX came out. Huge engine, EFI and independent rear on a sport quad? Sold. The independent rear really stands out to me because we mostly do trail riding with a good mix of sand riding as well. Which ever I go with, I'll definitely be getting a rise on the bars for comfort.

My question is, should I be completely sold on the 700XX?

I'm 6'6" and 250-260 depending on how close it is to the holidays.

700XX fit me WAY better than my 400EX I had. I actually went in the dealership to get a 450r and came out with the 700xx.

You put any rise on the bars? My friend has a 2" rise on his 450R and it feels awesome. Especially when standing.

If I had it to do all over again, I think I'd go with the 700xx. I'm apparently an average size guy in this group. The very little seat time I have on the 700 convinced me it is way more appropriate for my height/weight than the 400 or 450. Plus I didn't like the way the 450 delivered it's power (verytop-endish - but man once it got wrapped up, it pulled like crazy).

I think the 700 is the sasquatch-club quad. The 400/450 size quads are made for those little tiny mistakes of evolution that would have been eated 1000 years ago. :D

Ha!

I was told I looked like a spider riding a lady bug when I was riding mine.

Oh how it groaned with me on sand climbs!

Yeah, people say I look like I am riding a Power Wheels when I am on my 400EX.

Also, what do guys think the best exhaust kit for the XX is? I plan on putting on nerfs, front bumper, exhaust and air filter.

Dude.. go 700xx.. I have had it for 6 months and LOVE IT.

The power is great, I have raced a modded 700R was beaten by 1/2 quad.. and I am STOCK.

Plenty of power, night and day compared to the 400ex..

THE IRS is amazing and comfortable.. The backend is a little high strung in whoops.. lost my balls a couple of times, and 1 time the quad went up my ***.

Overall it is a great bike.. not to mention EFI over carb.

Get the big 3 and open up a whole new world of speed. PCIII, intake, exhaust.

over on club 700xx they have bo white maps.. people are very happy.

450R is a sick bike but still straight axle... punishing IMHO.

Oh, also the IRS is a bit tough to power slide, not that I am doing those often.

I jumped it this weekend,, stay on the back end and she floats just fine.

Overall it is an amazing quad... you wont be disappointed.

Well, they offered me $8,500 out the door at the first place I tried. Pretty sure I can get a better deal at the place I'm going to check out on Saturday. Got to finally see one and sit on it in person, though. Feels great. Still can't believe they put that wimpy *** front bumper on it. Oh well, planned on putting a new one on anyways.

dude, im on the same boat.... 6' 3", 270 lbs.... weird coincidence that I have an 05 400ex as well and grew out of it real fast... anyways... trust me, you WILL NOT be dissapointed with the 700xx... I am very pleased, and don't really need to put a longer stem, except if you want it for looks, with a smaller bars.... go for it... I got a little lucky by getting it 6K out the door.... good luck

oh almost forgot... In my opinion... HMF for sureskis, BUT be sure to get a programmer... as far as cosmetics, I'm a IMS ROLL guy... bumper, heel guard, pegs... the works... but that's just me

Yeah, I really like how you can customize the HMFs. I was thinking black pipe with a brushed vector tip, or a black tip.

Kinda like this:

I know you are a little far away from Oklahoma, but here are a couple of decent deals. $8500 is crazy.

I tried eBay. Found one that was listed at $4,995, but after everything was said and done, it was going to be $6,700 before shipping, which is at least $500. Then I found out that I had to go down and pay in person, in New Jersey! That's another couple hundred bucks.

I went to another dealer, getting it for $7,000 out the door. It's brand spankin' new, still in the crate. Got them to throw in the first service, too. I'd much rather buy local, that way if something happens I can go down and hassle them about it. Easier than calling some dealership across the country, or dealing with Honda themselves.

It's hard buying around here, though. We have a lot of nice riding around and people will pay top dollar for bikes.

The one I posted on Ebay says "No Extra Fees". I have thought about checking it out. I deal with bank repos and we had 430 new Hondas picked up from a dealer that went under. I am hoping Honda will let us regular dealers buy them. I heard they are trying to get other Honda dealers to take them. That is the main reason I haven't contacted Shawnee Honda about one.

I'd still have to go down to Oklahoma to buy and pick it up (~$350 for gas alone), then I'd have to pay the tax on it. Not worth it at all. Plus if anything happened with it, I'd have to deal with someone 1,200 miles away.

I don't get what you are talking about. If you are an out of state buyer, you do not have to pay Oklahoma tax. You will have to pay tax in your state, which you still have to do anyway. If there is a problem with the bike, any Honda shop should honor the warranty.

$7000 out the door is about the same as you would pay if you came to OK and bought one. So you wouldn't really save anything by doing it. $8000 is a different story though. That is all I was referring to. If these dealers here are offering them that cheap, I would assume there is one closer to you that would be able to match it.

go with the 700xx. dont listen to what dirtwheels says. they have been biased towards yamahas for years. the 700xx has the highest speed of any stock quad you can buy. It has a smooth ride and handles great. It would be a better fit for a bigger guy.

Agreed. Go with the 700XX, the 450's for mini-me. I've decided on one its just I'm still trying to round up the cash for one. I've got too many toys as it is. They are $6500 OTD here, in central KS. I just checked a couple of weeks ago when I bought a fishing boat.

...oh and F dirt wheels... I bought recieved my last dirt wheels issue last month, and I've been a subscriber since 1988. The article on the 550 4x4's proved it for me that they are in the tank with yamaha now...

Yeah, I hate trying to decide on a quad from reading articles in any mag. Dirt Wheels favors Yamaha all to hell. To anyone in the market for a quad, do your own research. You will get much better results.

did anyone happen to notice in the june dirtwheels mag, In the 450 shootout they said the hondas top speed was the slowest at 69.5 mph. As allways the yamaha seems to be the fastest at 78.8 mph on their gps unit. the only problem i have with that is in the april 2008 dirtwheels they gps all the bikes and in their drag race test they said the 450r and yfz had the best acceleration. they then did their top speed runs and again the 450r and yfz toped the speed charts at 78mph. You can even go back to august 2007 and their top speed readings are very close . so can anyone explain how the honda top speed went from 78.8 to 69.5 in one year and the yamaha didnt. remember 2009 shootout same honda and its not the efi yamaha it is still carb bike . you can look it up for yourself.

No, I didn't notice that, but it doesn't surprise me. It seems DW doesn't even try to hide it.

Honestly, I've got nothing against yamaha they're good quads. Its just DW has sold their soul to them.

Same here, I think out of all the quad manufacturers out there, Yamaha makes one of the best. If Honda didn't make quads I'd be on a Yamaha. (that wasn't a smarta** comment either)

I used to be 270, but then the doc's wanted to put me on meds for blood pressure & cholesterol and I had a real-life awakening and realized my perpetual plans to lose weight and get in shape most likely weren't going to happen (since at the age of 42 it hadn't happened yet). That was 2 years ago, now I've lost about 60 pounds of fat, gained more muscle and all my bloodwork is fine.

ANYWAYS.....I went with the 400EX cause it's my first quad and it just seemed like a good starting point. I'm just a recreational rider but I really do enjoy drifting the rear-end, sliding a bit around corners and just goofing around with the family. Everythign I read & heard about the 700XX pointed to it being an all-out race quad that was more made to blast through GNCC events at top-speed. Drifting or sliding the IRS, not really part of the equation. I also read that the bottom-end is a bit high-geared and the quad tends to stall pretty easy.

When I went to the dealer to check it out, I didn't entirely care for the front bumper and the insect/predator looks of the plastic. When I went to lift the front-end, my fingers slipped up the V-shape and cut skin: it bit me!! :ermm:

The rear-end of the 450 & 400 had a really nice cush to it, whereas the 700 felt stiff (I know it's to account for the weight). I dunno, just felt like doing the practical thing and going with the 400EX. I did it up with nerf bars, HMF carbon-fiber exhaust, IMS hand guards, ProArmor front bumper, belly & swing-arm plates, Elka shocks, K&N air filter....it all looks great and has plenty of power for me. I LOVE the way the back-end drifts or hooks-up so predicatably...very happy with the quad.

Note: the thing is very easy to stall in 1st-gear as well, I found myself several times just pulling-in the clutch and popping the start button to re-fire the engine. No biggy, but it does the same thing the 700XX is reputed to do in 1st gear as well. EFI would have been nice and I'm sure there will be situations where the IRS clearance would have been handy....but otherwise the 400EX is a great starter quad for me and perhaps, in a few years, I'll look into the 700XX. I just wish the plastic wasn't so cartoon-aggressive-insect like. (Btw, I passed on the '08 400EX in favor of the '07 400EX because I liked the plastic better on the '07....this new fad of Extreme plastic is just fugly).
