How much cat-5 does everyone have in their houses? I just got done pulling some more in my house, now I have 300'. But when I get done I will have around 700' totals. Its nice having a secure network connection in every room.

Funny you should ask! I just spent a couple of days (off + on) running cat5 in our house. I only bought a 500' box and didn't have enough to do all the rooms I wanted to. I put a router in our computer room/office where the cable modem is and ran cable to 3 out of 5 bedrooms. I wanted to do 4 out of 5 bedrooms but wound up with only 3 wired. I have a little time though because my daughter is only 2.5 and it'll be a while before she needs a computer. So far I have 2 computers networked. I have to setup a computer for my youngest son one of these days. My work will be selling off a few more computers in a couple months. Maybe I'll bid on another one. By the way, what's a switch and a punch down panel?? I just used a router and nothing else. I'm certainly not a computer whizz and I'm really surprised I got it all working without any help from anybody.

punch down panel is a RJ21X. Its pretty much a 25 pair terminal for connecting multiple lines and break point for testing. There used mostly in businesses with multiple lines and a phone system which is what i'm assuming hes refering to as a switch

In my classroom at techschool, we have run over 10,000 feet of cable this year. I'm in the telecom class there, we have an OC-6. We are working on installing fiber optic lines in the room. We have 2 PBX's and a Nortel switch(we don't use it), we use line simulators with ISDN capability. We have 166 blocks and lots of other stuff. Each student has thier own NIU. We also have 2 Pedastals in the room plus one in the telecom 1 class across the hall. We have 2 multiplexers. and we should be learning DS-3 soon as well.

I've got an amazing 10 feet or so running to an old box I use primarily to backup files (although the wife uses it to surf / email)..

I hope to have wireless up and running by the spring so I can combine my 2 of my summer pastimes...

sitting on the front porch drinking beer + surfing the net..

cold beer + wireless net access, does it get any better?

LOL

I'm running my own active directory domain at my house, all wireless clients. For security I'm using WEP and MAC filtering. Works great, no need to wire anything. I can sit in my neighbors house and surf the web on my laptop through my internet connection.

1500' of Cat 5E at my house. However, my telephone service is CAT 3 so it does not help me much. We will never have Cable service either, so I wired it in hopes of getting Satellite hookup in the future.

No CAT-5 here.

But I was hoping to get a satellite Internet, till I found the prices!

One place was around 60 a month not including hardware
And another was around 80 a month without hardware...:grr

Too much...I'm stuck with my Dial-up for awhile.

I just got my own computer for Christmas and a wireless network. So the family room and my bedroom computer are connected. The wireless is easy to setup and seems to run good.

A lot of people build home networks for the ease of sharing high speed internet access, file sharing, game playing....and it is actually fun just building them!

If you have a network going a nice free program is called VNC. Its avaible at www.realvnc.com With it you can control any computer on the network from another. You just type in the IP address and password. Its pretty neat. You can also control a PC froma Mac or any other operating system.
