A freind of mine could get a 400ex engine for pretty cheap. But he has a 300ex. Hes wondering if he could make it fit in his 300 without any problems. Hes got a 95 300ex with some mods. Any help would be good. Thanks

It can be done, its not that hard but you have to find a place to the oil tank to go and such.
You also can use the stock 400ex headers but you may need to bend them a bit to work.

can you say, wheelie out of control?
In the end, it would probably be cheaper to sell the 300ex and just buy a 400 (which will handel 10 times better).

do you think there will be any problems with the frame considering its a 95 and beacuse of more vibe from the larger engine? thanks for the replies.

yes, most probably, Im not very sure how the 400 motor mounts but mostprobably the frame would wear much quicker because of none proper mounter and 300ex frames are just weaker overall

I got to thinking..doesn't happen often but when i do it's usually a pretty good idea...With the 400ex motor in there you'll probably need a longer swingarm to handle all the extra power and then extended a-arms for better handling. It's just a brain fart i had.

yep, thats what I was trying to say in my 1st post, it would be waaay cheaper just to by a 400ex

well he already has works dual rates, 400ex arms, and a +4 axle. The only thing I think he should be worried about is the frame. I told him to just get the 330 kit and he'd be beating stock 400's.

I was just wonderin. but a lot of people put 350x engines in a 300 and they say its vary reliable and runs good to. How could a stock 400 engine be too much for the frame when its only a little larger than the 350? And wouldn't it be awsome to beat 400's when they think its a 300:devil

it was in a old issuse of dirtwheels in a readers ride section... back in 1999 when the 400ex 1st came out i remember it...

guy said he had to make a custom oil tank and mount it behind the motor... i can't remember the rest...

Yes..it would prolly be a fun project.

But its like stocktires said..in the long run he'd have wished to buy a 400ex instead of doin that.

Was that the picture of the quad on the sand dune? I remember something like that!
keep in mind:
250 x dynoed at 18 hp
350 x dynoed at 23 hp
400ex dynoed at 28 hp
how do you think that motor/ chassis combo will fare out?

A guy down here actually has a 300ex with a 400ex motor, I have ridden the quad, It actually doesn't wheelie much easier than a 400ex, It doesn't work that bad actually , alot better than I thought it would.
He also ended up mounting the stock 400ex oil tank up under the front plastic and it works good i guess haha, the motor isn't seized yet.

I dunno where your getting that a 250x can put out 18hp :huh
the others look about right though, maybe 1-2 hp high.

But anyway, I know it would be a kewl project, but like quadfreak and I, you have to realize its just a total waste of $!

thats a lil closer, that dyno muct read a lil high.
I've seen about 10 different dynos that a 300ex puts out 15.9 and a 400 puts out about 25.8-25.9
but dyno's arent the most reliable thing in the world, just good for comparing hp on the same dyno. Im guessing thats rwhp though.
anyway :)
