I have a 2001 honda 400ex. im putting in a 05 450r carb in and im wondering if im using the right size jets. i picked up a 160 and a 165. i tried the 160 last night and it wouldnt start. is this cuz the jets the wrong size or do i just have to play around with the fuel screw a lot more?

The main jet doesn't effect the starting. You probably need to check your pilot jet.

where does that fuel screw need to be? i had heard to turn it all the way in and then back it out about 2 1/2 turns. is that about right?

Pour gas in the carb and start it. If it does start you need a smaller pilot jet. Dont mess with the main til you get it started. Your screw should be 2 turns out counter clockwise from tight. Once you get it started adjust the screw counter clock til you can hit the gas and get a clean response. Run the quad on dry pavement til you hit 4th gear run it open for a while At a high rpm then park the bike immediately! Take the spark plug out if it is white you need to richen it up. You should buy a couple jets to make this easy. I know my way may not be the best but it works for me. Also new plugs and wires go a long way. Also check the gauge on the plugs.
