I dug my 400EX out of hibernation(of about 2 years). I sprayed carb cleaner in the carb, and gave her a fresh oil change. When I finally started it, it idled super fast, and the header started turning red hot! Any idea what could cause this?

sounds like it is running lean. If you left fuel in it during storage you probably will need to tear down the carb and clean it.

was the choke on when it got super hot and did it idle without the choke?

Sounds like a pilot jet, make sure you clean it out with a VERY small wire OR just replace it, heck they are only 4 bucks and well worth it to not have to clean the darn thing out.

I had a ttr250 dirtbike that would do the same exact thing and also a few friends quads that would do it, the pilot circuit is lean so it is VERY hard to start and if you can get it running with the choke it makes your exhaust glow red hot.

Do what they said and get that carb cleaned, its not hard to do and it will get you ready for this riding season.

You might need to run it and not idle it of the jet is crapped up.

Looks like I'll be tearing apart my carb. Do I need to take absolutely everything apart, or will taking the float bowl off and cleaning the jets be good enough?
