I have a 86 250R that I have not run for many years. I rebuilt the top end and have it running but the water pump seems to be making quite a bit of noise. It has been so long since I had it running I can not remember if it always made the noise. I do not have a gauge on it but it does not seem to me that it is running too hot. What should I hear from the water pump?

Thanks

what's it sound like? a whine? growl..... i'd pull the side cover en have a look see. while in there, inspect the counter balancer bearings.

The sound is more of a ticking sound and only noticeable at idle. Once any throttle is given it goes away. When time permits I will pull the side plate and inspect.

although its been quite awhile since you've heard this thing run. you recall that these machines do make a certain amount of engine noise at idle? some are louder than others.

most likely its the sound that every 2-stroke makes. its a little rattle sound at idle. when you rev it, it goes away. to be honest, i believe its piston slap.

Thanks for the replies.
I will stop worrying about the water pump noise and try to figure why it starts cutting out shortly after hitting the power band.

for re-assurance purposes i'd atleast inspect the counter bearings that way you can get it totally off your mind and focus elsewhere on other things
