Is there anything I can do to the stock shocks to make them softer for trail riding?

not really, there is a preload adjustment, but it doesn't really change much. the rear shock is adjustable, but i'm not sure how to go about doing that.

I will get the rear shock revalved and resprung soon. I am mainly asking about the front shocks. They are both set at the lowest setting for preload.

Hygear suspension says they can revalve 400ex shocks, but I have heard otherwise from other people on the web.

Here is the link: http://www.hygearsuspension.com/honda400ex.html

^^^ Is that BS? Or can they really revalve it?

I was also thinking about respringing them.

Should I even bother with any of this? Is it worth it?

Im on a pretty tight budget, so thats why im asking.

i don't see why not. they had to put them together so why couldn't they take them apart for repairs.

400ex front shocks are nonrebuildable.

Your cheapest options are:
1) Used aftermarket shocks
2) Works shocks
3) Elka Recreation Series
4) Rebuilt 450R shocks

Any of these would be a huge improvement over stock, provided they are set up for your weight and riding style. I think the best value would be to shop around and find a cheap set of 450R shocks and have them rebuilt. Then, you'll have fully adjustable, high quality, reservoir shocks for just a little more than a pair of new, economy model, non-res shocks.

That's what I went for. If you look around on the boards and ebay you can find used, revalved 450R shocks with dual or triple rate springs. Look on the 450R boards where guys are selling them to upgrade to long travel or higher end shocks. The 450R shocks have compression and rebound adjustments built in. So you end up with a nice set of fully adjustable reservoir shocks for a lot less than something new from the aftermarket.

You just have to look/ask to make sure they were revalved and sprung for your weight and type of use, otherwise you are looking at more $ to have them revalved or resprung again.

I got a set of these that had been revalved and resprung for my weight and xc use for under $400. If you cannot find a match in a used setup you should be able to find used 450R stock shocks for under $200, then it will cost $4-500 for the revalve and respring from a place like DeRisi or GT Thunder. And that's still a decent value comared to a set of new Elka's or other brands with rebound and compression adjustments, those will run closer to $1000.

Im probably either going to go with the kfx450 shocks or ltz400 shocks. They suit my riding style better, and both are possible to put on. What do you guys think?

do it. i run YFZ shocks on mine and love them. everybody says those shocks off other quads will be garbage unless you have them rebuilt to your weight/style... which would be true......... if you are a competitive racer. for the recreational guy, any of the shocks you listed or the 450R's or the YFZ's will be a huuge improvement over stock EX units. will they be even better rebuilt? sure, but if you're buying stock shocks off another quad you're probably not looking to spend big bucks anyways.

at least that's how i justify it.

X2. If you are wanting to rebuild them right away, just look for some used aftermarket shocks then have those rebuilt. It will be money better spent in the end.

I recently got some 450r triple rates on ebay for $280 and they are sooooo great. I can whip through corners and the landing is so soft.
