Won't idle, please help.

Alright, I have an 88 R with a 310 kit. It has been ported for midrange, and has LRD exhaust, reeds, etc. It is still on the stock carb though. It starts usually on the second kick. The bike pulls hard all the way through, but I can't get the thing to idle. I have to keep the throttle cracked a hair or it just dies. When it dies from this it's hard to get started back up after. I tried adjusting the tension on the throttle cable, but can't get enough to keep it going. I've tried turning the idle speed screw(choke knob), won't fix it. I've turned the airscrew from all the way in to about 3.5 turns out, won't help. I had the carb all cleaned and rebuilt but just can't get this to idle. The bike also has a new stator, new crank bearings, and fresh top end. Should I just buy a 38mm PWK? Do you think that the problem would be in the carb, because that's what it seems like to me. I don't want to go out and buy a new carb right now if that won't help my problem. I'd really appreciate some help.

maybe your pilot jet is to rich

it is either a clogged pilot or a float bowl issue.

pull of the bowl and see what size pilot you have. It sounds like it is too rich but you should be in the ball park of a 48-50 range with a 34mm.
BTW if you put a 38mm a/s you will see huge gains over that stocker

I pulled the carb last night and cleaned it all out, no change. The pilot is a 48, main is 165, and the needle was on the second clip. It runs real good up top, just can't get it to idle. Jetting up top is really good, the plug is always a nice tan color

try and run a 45 to see what happens

i too am going to say it sounds like its a phat pilot jet.

Well I popped in a 45 pilot and now i can't get it to start. I'm getting really frustrated. I did order a 38 pwk air striker, and hope it comes in tomorrow or saturday so I can hopefully ride this weekend. If you have any other ideas please let me know.
