i have a 84 ford ranger, it has a 2.3 in it factory, the ngot a 2.8 some where along the line then i got it and the oil rings are shot now... i found a 4.0 for a really good deal and im gettin it tomorrow. theres 110K on it and i get all the harness and all that but i need a ECU yet...

i understand how to remove my motor... and all that but i need to move the left motor mount over... do i go to the left or the right and anyone know how much?

also i know the fuel system need some work for the EFI now... so how do i get one of the HOP fuel pumps?

Just an FYI on the 4.0's when they get in the 150k+ range, heads crack and are junk

I have a 4.0 in my gargage with cracked heads and 148K on it. The 2.9's run longer than the 4.0's... usually. What do you mean by "HOP" pump?

First off, was your 2.9 fuel injected? Most likely it was. You can use the stock computer to fire the fuel injection I believe.

Thats defenently the newer style 4.0 motor since its an over head cam motor and not the pushrod version.

Any way to tell the year roughly?

The older the 4.0, the easier the swap. The less computer controlled garbage you'll have. Also, make sure you have all of your wiring. The best way to do an engine swap is to have a complete running donor truck for your swap. That way you have everything and know it works.

2.9's and 4.0's were known for bad heads. The 2.9 is one of fords longer lasting motor's, they just have crappy valvetrains, along with the 4.0's. It's probably going to be easier to loose the dual tanks as well. Less wiring and fueling issues. IMO not worth the extra work. Why don't you get a high pressure pump if you don't have the psi you need?

i want the high pressure pump... just dont know where to get one or how much they cost..

also on the ECU plug in i have
F5SB-14A464-A
289 8A15BO b

just like that... any one able to tell anything off that?

how long will that 4.0 run that i have? could i also run a line to connect both tanks at one spot or something like that and have a hose in it and have it run off that one pump? or something...

There is no way to tell how long a particular engine is going to run. I've seen new ford 5.4's make it 4,000 miles and there are reported 2.9's over 1 million miles. I honestly couldn't be able to tell what year that motor is right now with just part numbers.

As far as your pump, check summit, jegs, etc. They have lots of them, just make sure your regulator is good as well. As far as the tanks, most setups I've seen have two seperate pumps and are operated seperately via a switch in the dash.
