i was looking on craigslist out of curiosity and found a 2002 400ex for $1900. my question is should i sell my 300ex to get it and how much could i make off of my quad once i get the new swingarm in. recently i got a new chain and sprockets, new axle bearings and all the mods in my sig. here is the craigslist post for the 400:

the only problem i would have is that i put close to $1300 into mine and it is all set up the way i want it. i don't want to have to "start over" with the new quad but it seems as if it has a good start already with the mods it has. it says that the bike smokes when it starts up so maybe it needs a rebuild soon, that is my concern. i don't want to be stuck with a money pit that doesn't run. i won't call him though until i can find out if i can get enough cash for my 300 to pay for it. I don't have enough money otherwise. thanks for the opinions. i can take new pictures if you guys want me to because i got rid of the old headlight and wired in a kit from walmart that look much better. sorry for the long post guys.

I'd have to say no to that bike. It smokes when it starts but doesn't when its warm. that usually means the rings are burnt and in my opinion judging by the smashed taillight and custom wheelie bar that this things has spent most of its life in the 12 o'clock position doing wheelies and starving its self of oil. It also has one of the screws missing out of the muffler so I bet he took the baffles out. And if you look at the top picture you'll notice the alignment is off on the right tire. could just need adjusting or a bent tie rod...or it could be something bigger. IMO if your looking for a project (which from what i've read you not) i'd go for it but otherwise I would pass up this deal. sorry for the long post also

I would have to agree with Tommy. I would save the bike you have. You said it is how you want it and chances are the 400 wouldnt be. Plus you always enjoy something more when you have some elbow grease into it and know that your the one that did the stuff. In my opinion.

you guys are right. i would love to have a 440ex or even a 400 for that matter; i've never ridden one. i can only imagine how those things pull when you get on it going up through the gears. i'm getting a 400ex carb to make myself feel better, lol. i love what i did to mine so i wouldn't want to see that go away, i already did that with the blaster i had to get this 300. i have alreadf spent over $3200 in the last 2 years between my 3 quads i've had, so i need to curb my spending anyway. just had an impulse i guess.

dirtdawg, the odd thing is I am in the same spot, and came to the same decision. I am keeping my 300. I have the chance at a 2002 400EX that is MINT. May have 10 tanks of fuel ran through it at most. It is for sale for $2000 to me, maybe a bit more to a stranger.
2 things stopped me.
I have my 300 almost where I want it.
The 02 400 has no reverse.
And my 300 reverse is bearable / usable now that I have modified it.
Add in I will never get out of the 300 what it is worth or at least anywhere near what I have in it now.
So,I just got my cylinder back from the machine shop freshly bored. Waiting for my cam and head to get here so I can send the head off to be ported. I am going to post some pics as soon as I get a minute to get the new stuff on. Working like a dawg right now, 2 jobs. My old job that sucks and my new job that doesn't. I just landed a job as the service writer / service manager for Iron Block Harley Davidson. God I love telling people that I work in a Harley shop.
I won't apologize for the long post. *LOL* Sometimes I get to talking and talking,,,,,,,,,
