alright huys I have an 02 440ex, baldwin racing port and polish, no airbox, 450r carb, lrd pro 4 exhaust

the quads smokin kinda a lot when atarting and warming up but I think it also smokes a bit when ridin but not as much?

I heard it could be rings or valve seals or the gas?

latest things I've done fo it is oil change and new clutch if that helps at all

I also ran 87 octane in it the few last rides mixed wirth a bit of 93 which is what I usually run

the bikes smoke like this in the past a bit but definately not as much as now though I don't know what could be wrong I don't wana ride it and screw it up

maybe valve adjustment? lemme know guys tha nks

white smoke could be you silencer packing as well. next time it does it, smell it. if it has a god awful smell that smells nothing like a petroleum product then thats the fiberglass packing burning.

will the bad silencer packing cause a lot of white smoke?

could to much oil do it? I have an oversized oil cooler and I always have to kind of gues when doin oil I put like 3 quarts in this tim I believe or close to that.. my dipsticks from a 250 so it doesent read right

The bad packing could make it smoke white i am not real sure since I have never actually burned it, but it could be running lean too since it mmay let more air and exhaust through with the packing out. We are discussing the oil in the tank on another thread that just started a few minutes ago, i am wondering if the oil tank makes a difference in oil to the motor since it only sucks in so much at a time anyway. I am not sure, steve

its moisture in the exhaust. mine does every time i start it, and until the motor is fully warm , its there. its normal. cars do it too

I doubt you have too much oil in it. If you did. your clutch would start slipping

so i should richen t up a bit s that in or out on the airfuel screw i forget?

also i seemed to notice now that my headgasket is leaking on the exhaust side.. could this be the casue of the smoke?

lean mixture could very well be it snce i messed weith the carb a while bac and dont get to riding this bie much...

a leak could make it run lean and cause it. I would get that fixed then see if it goes away, then do a plug chop and see where your jetting is and how the plug looks. after those two make the decision on jetting it or not. steve

so replacing the headgasket pacing the exhaust puting a new oil change should put me in a good direction get a new plug and then start jeting the 450r carb again from there..

the jetting may be fine once the gasket is fixed and the packing is new. steve

alright guys so I pulled the valve cover off and the nut near the sparkplug for the head was loose.. like finger tight pretty much.. I think that was the casue of the headgasket leaking..?


there is a lot of carbon on the valves and a bit on top the piston? shoukd I just clean it off with a wire wheel?

how should I clean the carbon off the valves if there's a lot of carbon should I replace them? and the springs and all?
