250R motor ? years?

hey Got an 88-89 250R frame the other day thinkin about my next project. will only a 88-89 motor work in a 88-89 frame can I put a 86-87 motor in a 88-89 frame or even an atc 250R motor in a 88-89 frame an info will help thanks
