well the subject pretty much says it all. i want to know what some symptoms of a bad stator are. i am very much an amateur and im just trying to learn.

Stators are really simple. Basically, they are just coils of wire, wrapped around an iron core, and then the coils are covered in epoxy.

So what kind of things can go wrong with something so simple? Either a coil can break, or it can short together. That's why the diagnostic test for them is so simple, because either of the problems will show up in a resistance test.


Generally, either the stator works, or it doesn't. There isn't much of an "in between". Engines can have a big gray area, they can run good, or run like crap. Stators don't have a gray area, it's black and white. It works, or it doesn't. If you DO have a gray area that comes and goes, it's most likely in the CDI, not the stator.

Now, the lighting coils and ignition coils are separate, it's possible that one would work, and the other wouldn't.
