i have a 04 z400 se and 1 day i was ridin it it seemed like it ran out of gas so i filled it up and it wouldn't start,me and my brother took the carb off and cleaned it put it back on and it ran like crap,so we took the carb back off and changed the jets and it did the same thing,i bought a used cdi box just to see if that was the problom,it ran for about 2 hours and did the same thing, now it will run but it cuts out and won't idle, can anyone help me?

same thing happened to me with same problems and it was the previous owner set the idle so low that it would only run when the choke was on and it would bog all over the place. Check your idle adjustment.

Sounds like your valves clearances are out. Get a manual and check you tolerances. It more than likely needs to be reshimmed this is a very common problem on the Z

Yep I'll bet they are too tight not letting the motor breath. Without proper flow thru the head its not going to pull the fuel and air thru to let it run.

disconnect your voltage regulator or the 3 wire connector at the stator, than try it.

i had same prob . turned out had water in gas .befor you spend any more money at least try draining your fuel tank , float bowl , make sure your air box is dry and clean air filter make sure your float valve and area is clean and moves freely. and make sure your CDI box conection is clean and not ceroded. these all the things that were done to clear up my prob

hip hip huray !! at least you didnt have to send it into the shop ... hey a product called seafoam or stable put into the tank every so often or keeping float bowl and fuel tank drained if sitting for more then a month might help prevent that from happening again

Hey, glad to hear you found your problem, but don't forget that most of the debris that gets into carbs. is through the carb. vent.So make your vent hose is in good shape, routed properly and clean.
Cheers.
