Pappy
04-18-2009, 07:50 PM
Round #4 of the AMA ATV Motocross Series would see the state of Virginia as this round would be held at the Birch Creek Motocross Facility in Danville Va.

The weather for todays race was outstanding as temperatures started in the mid 60's but would climb steadily into the low 80's with enough sunshine to make anyone happy!

Pappy
04-18-2009, 07:57 PM
The track was in good shape early on saturday, but it's known to get rough as almost 40 different classes do battle on the track throughout the day!

Pappy
04-18-2009, 08:01 PM
Ant Burke would run into mechanical trouble as his CDI box malfunctioned. Thats not how he wanted his first moto of the day to start:p

Pappy
04-18-2009, 08:03 PM
Billy Cottage was on fire as he ran out front, and was wearing some cool retro Honda colors!

Pappy
04-18-2009, 08:06 PM
The Womens Pro Am is always fun to watch, and these girls can flat scoot around the track! Michelle Natalie would grab the lead early in moto 1

Pappy
04-18-2009, 08:08 PM
The battles usually fall into place and remain highly contested throughout the moto no matter if its a battle for first or last!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 10:54 AM
With Michelle Natalie outfront, I figured John would be somewhere close by keeping tabs on her. John is no starnger to racing pressure, but I bet he had butterflies watching this race!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 10:58 AM
Byrd would challenge for the lead, but couldnt make a pass stick

Pappy
04-20-2009, 11:00 AM
Johns hat took the brunt of his enthusiasm as he cheered on his wife!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 11:05 AM
There were certain areas of the track that Natalie could open up a sizeable lead

Pappy
04-20-2009, 11:12 AM
Natalie would ride to a moto 1 victory!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 11:18 AM
The action seems almost non stop if you stay on the track, and no sooner then the last class is completed, the next one is rocketing your way!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 11:21 AM
Birch Creek offers alot of great vantage points for fans to catch all the action!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 11:22 AM
The big triple is a fan and racer favorite

Pappy
04-20-2009, 11:28 AM
For the youth racers, this might as well be the Pro class...they take it serious and they ride like they had a million dollars on the line!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 11:30 AM
It is amazing to watch the flow of the races, there always seems to be something going on, even though alot of hurry up and wait does take place

Pappy
04-20-2009, 11:32 AM
On the track, the action is everywhere you look

Pappy
04-20-2009, 11:34 AM
Moto after moto all day long...and for me, having so many things happening sure made the day go by fast!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 11:35 AM
I even was able to keep track of a few of my friends as I saw them zip past me:p

Pappy
04-20-2009, 12:15 PM
The jumps at Birch Creek run the gamut from mild to little wild, but all the racers seemed to be able to handle pretty much what was thrown at them with ease....well, they made it look easy:blah:

Pappy
04-20-2009, 12:17 PM
I know alot of fans head to these races to catch the the Pro's in action, but for me, watching the youth classes is the most exciting.

Pappy
04-20-2009, 12:55 PM
The Pro's of tomorrow are right here folks, and if you study them, you can see how far they will prgress as they get older and rise up the ranks.

Pappy
04-20-2009, 12:57 PM
Back in the Pro pits, everything was being checked and tuned to give the riders the best their machine could offer.

Pappy
04-20-2009, 12:58 PM
John Natalie listens closely as he discusses set up options

Pappy
04-20-2009, 12:59 PM
For Harold Goodman, a few free minutes meant grabbing a sandwich:p

Pappy
04-20-2009, 01:13 PM
Josh Creamer does some checking on his KFX450R

Pappy
04-20-2009, 01:16 PM
Having mechanical issues when your winning the race, and only 1 turn from the checkered flag sucks! A valiant effort was given as the young racer pushd his machine towards the finish line, but it would be in vain as he was passed just feet before he could get across the line. Character building in progress!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 01:19 PM
There were a few wrecks as one would expect throughout the day

Pappy
04-20-2009, 01:22 PM
Racers were telling me that the track was good but getting rough. With as many moto's that were being run, it was to be expected and the track crew would respond when there was a break in the action.

The racing continued non stop as the days sunshine started to heat things up.

Pappy
04-20-2009, 01:23 PM
Everyone was busily trying to catch their rider for the scrapbook!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 01:25 PM
Loosing your seat can be a real pain:p Literally:blah:

Pappy
04-20-2009, 01:26 PM
Proving that the will to win runs deep, he wouldnt let off not for a second even when he had to adjust to not being able to throw some english into it when he needed! Im sure he was a little sore!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 01:28 PM
I wanted to spend more time at the gate getting some start shots, its always a rush watching the gate drop and the quads launch!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 01:30 PM
Blowing a corner, this rider ended up in the muck..stuck and required a tow:p

Pappy
04-20-2009, 01:47 PM
The Womens Pro Am moto 2 was on the track and Heather Byrd wasn't wanting a repeat and set out from the start to win this race!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 01:48 PM
Byrd pulled out front and Natalie wasnt able to gain ground on here as teh first two laps were run

Pappy
04-20-2009, 01:53 PM
Running 3rd would be Adrienne Cooper , who finished 3rd as well in moto 1

Pappy
04-20-2009, 01:56 PM
Byrd would claim the win with a 2-1 finish, with Natalie securing a solid second.

Pappy
04-20-2009, 02:02 PM
Pro practice was on the track as the fastest atv racers in the world took center stage and garnered everyones attention

Pappy
04-20-2009, 02:10 PM
The first few laps were conservative as the riders checked things out

Pappy
04-20-2009, 02:12 PM
Wimmer is one of my favorite riders to photograph. he is very smooth and consistant which allows me to zero in and catch him at the precise moment I want to lap after lap!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 02:13 PM
It only took a lap or two and then the boys let the dawgs eat!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 02:16 PM
As the sound of one or two of the pro riders machines went from a lazy romp to a full on attack, the rest joined in and the roar of these highly modified machines instantly had every eye in the place on them!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 02:18 PM
Jason Dunkelberger would pay the series a visit this round as he has been on the west coast giving his YFZ450R a workout in a few series there.

Pappy
04-20-2009, 02:19 PM
Jeremy Lawson was putting his DS450 through its paces as things really started getting cranked up

Pappy
04-20-2009, 02:21 PM
My son grabbed a camera and started catching what I couldnt:p

Pappy
04-20-2009, 02:25 PM
Hurry up Pro guys, I wanna race:devil:

Pappy
04-20-2009, 02:29 PM
Now thats taking it easy:p

Pappy
04-20-2009, 02:32 PM
Staging lanes loaded with some sweet rides!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 02:36 PM
The racing was back in full force as soon as the pro's cleared the track.

Pappy
04-20-2009, 02:38 PM
Cody went off to a different section and was able to get some cool shots!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 02:42 PM
On the upper side, the dust was being dealt with

Pappy
04-20-2009, 02:44 PM
The sound from the gate let us know another class was now on its way

Pappy
04-20-2009, 02:45 PM
The dust was still an issue at this spot:p

Pappy
04-20-2009, 02:48 PM
I was pretty pumped to watch the Gibson and Heimes do battle once again.

Pappy
04-20-2009, 02:55 PM
The event from my perspective seemed to flow pretty well.

Pappy
04-20-2009, 02:58 PM
By saturday aftrenoon, I was ready for the final pro practice as I had done quite a few laps around this track:p I made one final sweep through the Pro pits before they headed out for their final time on the track for saturday

Pappy
04-20-2009, 02:59 PM
I think she could have laid the whammy on a few Pro's:o :D

Pappy
04-20-2009, 03:06 PM
Gust eye's up the triple as they prepared for a hard run during this session.

Pappy
04-20-2009, 03:07 PM
Mark Baldwin getting his riders gate prepped.

Truth be told, I think he just likes playing in the dirt:blah:

Pappy
04-20-2009, 03:09 PM
Most think they discuss racing, I heard this pow wow was about stock futures:D

Pappy
04-20-2009, 03:42 PM
It wasnt long before the elite of motocross were ripping Birch Creek apart!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 03:45 PM
Thomas Brown works through the back double double section as Cody and I both capture him from opposing angles:p

Pappy
04-20-2009, 03:46 PM
From Codys angle:D

Pappy
04-20-2009, 03:49 PM
I might have some serious help as Cody puts the hammer on Natalie. Its awesome to see him progress....and its always cool to see Natalie rip it up:D

Pappy
04-20-2009, 03:51 PM
Im sure a few of his shots will find their way into the magazines which is great....now he can start buying ME dinner:D

Wimmer and Brown rail a corner as the sun starts to set

Pappy
04-20-2009, 03:52 PM
Josh Creamer getting jiggy with it as he powers through a turn!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 03:55 PM
Motoworks rider Brandon Smith sorting things out as he puts in lap after lap here at Birch Creek

Pappy
04-20-2009, 03:57 PM
Wimmer is poetry in motion. I could have put the camera down and just watched him ride, its simply amazing how smooth he is and how fast he can go!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 03:59 PM
Lawson checking out a few different lines

Pappy
04-20-2009, 04:00 PM
Wienan getting things dialed in.

Pappy
04-20-2009, 04:01 PM
Cody Miller takes the inside line as Gust exits the outer line.

Pappy
04-20-2009, 04:03 PM
Jeremie Warnia opens her up as he heads to a corner.

Pappy
04-20-2009, 04:12 PM
The days action was almost complete, and for some the biggest problem was trying to eek the last little bit out of a sno-cone:p

Pappy
04-20-2009, 04:14 PM
Paul Gregg was back in competition after taking some time off to build a house and live a little:p

Pappy
04-20-2009, 04:18 PM
Mario Diangelo was givin' her hell!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 04:24 PM
Dude, I just wanna race!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 04:27 PM
The day was done for me and the boy, we were spent:p

Sunday would be a brand new day for the racers and some excellent action would be on tap!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 04:35 PM
The weather changed overnight and rain was in the region. Cloudy and overcast skies replaced the warm sun filled weather we had on tap for saturdays action.

Doug Gust really getting into the conversation as his quad is cleaned and readied for moto 1:p

Pappy
04-20-2009, 04:37 PM
The racing action is even faster paced on sunday as moto's are run and winners are rewarded!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 04:38 PM
One final check and the gate would soon drop!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 04:40 PM
The racing was intense as this would be the last chance to make things happen!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 04:42 PM
Some of the hottest action of the day!:D

Pappy
04-20-2009, 04:43 PM
Running out front, your fans and parents cheering you on....I sure wish I knew how that felt!:blah:

It was cool meeting you little dude....you looked great out there!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 04:45 PM
Breaking down sucks, but a reassuring pat from dad sure helps!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 04:46 PM
There were some good saves out there:p

Pappy
04-20-2009, 04:49 PM
Dunk, Kandell and Schumaker would be featured in the Pro LCQ

Pappy
04-20-2009, 04:54 PM
Schumaker would claim the lead and run to the win, securing his spot for the days race

Pappy
04-20-2009, 04:55 PM
Dunka nd Kandell would battle it out, however it would be Dunkelberger claiming the 2nd spot and a trip to the big show!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 04:58 PM
One thing I love about Birch creek is the elevation changes combined with a tight corner.

Pappy
04-20-2009, 05:00 PM
I just dig catching the expressions and intensity

Pappy
04-20-2009, 05:01 PM
Yes son, your about to wreck, please dont run down the big guy with the Nikon:p

Pappy
04-20-2009, 05:03 PM
My favorite shot of the weekend:p

Pappy
04-20-2009, 05:05 PM
Hendershot sets up to head down the ski slope

Pappy
04-20-2009, 05:09 PM
Justin Norman riding to the overall victory in Junior 25+

Pappy
04-20-2009, 05:10 PM
Never a good thing

Pappy
04-20-2009, 05:12 PM
Cody Gibson was handing out *** kickings in pro Am like noboys business:p

Pappy
04-20-2009, 05:13 PM
I havent seen Cody race since last season, but he looked just as fast, and maybe a touch more controlled

Pappy
04-20-2009, 05:17 PM
Devin Heimes checking things out as he clears the triple:eek2:

Pappy
04-20-2009, 05:28 PM
It was show time as Pro moto 1 was ready to rip.

Harlen wanted a crack the start so I took up a position at the next turn.

It would be Joe Byrd claiming the holeshot as the Pro class turned this corner into a war zone!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 05:30 PM
Byrd held the lead on lap 1 as Weinen and Wimmer give chase

Pappy
04-20-2009, 05:32 PM
Weinen would get by Byrd and was off and running!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 05:34 PM
The top 3 remained close, but it was Wimmers speed down the freeway that impressed me!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 05:35 PM
Natalie was on the move and after battling with Miller, he would be off to hunt down the leaders!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 05:36 PM
Greg Gee and Russel Schumaker make contact and were both lucky they didnt get hung up!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 05:39 PM
Wimmer sent Byrd back a spot and now controlled the #2 position as he set his sights on Weinen!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 05:40 PM
Natalie, Smith and Miller run 4th 5th and 6th

Pappy
04-20-2009, 05:41 PM
Wimmer reeled in Weinen and I saw Wimmer look back over the triple. I figured Wimmer would hold his position unless Weinen made a mistake or gave him a clean shot at the lead.

Pappy
04-20-2009, 05:43 PM
Josh Upperman would soon be dealing with Dug Gust as the old man was ready to move up a few spots!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 05:45 PM
Pat Brown would soon be putting the moves on Pelchat as he too was looking for more.

Pappy
04-20-2009, 05:47 PM
Harold Goodman would get a visit from Jeremy Lawson at the start while the hectic first turn traffic was in full swing. Goodman's machine took a good wack and Harold would have to settle for a crappy first moto.

Pappy
04-20-2009, 05:49 PM
Back up front, Wimmer shadowed Weinen who wasnt going away quietly!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 05:50 PM
Natalie ran in the 4th spot unchallenged, but couldnt close the gap on Byrd to give him a run

Pappy
04-20-2009, 05:54 PM
Weinens pitboard said it all!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 05:55 PM
Chad Weinen would ride a great race and claim the moto 1 victory!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 06:04 PM
In between motos, the Pros get to sign autographs for all the fans.

Pappy
04-20-2009, 06:06 PM
I dont think the old "James Bond" smoke screen is legal :p

Pappy
04-20-2009, 06:11 PM
More racing was ongoing in between the Pro motos and the action did not disappoint!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 06:12 PM
The racing was great in every class and fans really get their moneys worth IMO!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 06:18 PM
I need to put the camera down and watch a few motos:p :huh

Pappy
04-20-2009, 06:22 PM
Pro Am moto 2 would see Heimes get the jump on Gibson as the pair set out to do battle once more!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 06:24 PM
It would be interesting to see if Gibson would make something happen, I only hoped I would be in a spot where I could see it:p

Pappy
04-20-2009, 06:26 PM
It wasnt meant to be, as Gibson rode to the win. Heimes had gotten out of shape over a jump in the back section and Gibson would scoot by for the lead and never look back. Gibson 1-1

Pappy
04-20-2009, 06:28 PM
The boy has talent, but he has some stiff competition again this year!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 06:30 PM
One of the worst wrecks of the weekend would take place during the Pro Am 2nd moto when Ant Burke set sail over the triple and would have no where to go as Andy Travis and Burke would make things way to exciting for many of us!

The video of the crash is nuts and shows how fast bad things can happen. Thank god that both walked away. Burke suffered a broken wrist.

Pappy
04-20-2009, 06:50 PM
The hot lap was under way and we were about to see if Weinen could pull a repeat!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 06:52 PM
When Byrd hit the gas to clear the triple, I saw smoke. I knew he had issues and they quickly did what they could before the start

Pappy
04-20-2009, 06:59 PM
Moto two's gate would drop and again it would be Byrd out front.

I wasn't ready to shoot the start from this angle and didnt have time to make any chages so I apologise:p

Pappy
04-20-2009, 07:00 PM
Byrd charges into the turn with pressure from Creamer

Pappy
04-20-2009, 07:03 PM
Wimmer didnt get a great start and would be in traffic early

Pappy
04-20-2009, 07:04 PM
Pelchat cornholed Gust and everyone was forced outside to get by them

Pappy
04-20-2009, 07:05 PM
The medical flag was waving as one of the Pros had gone down

Pappy
04-20-2009, 07:07 PM
Keith Little was the downed rider and emerged on his own after a crash. He was ok, but unable to compete.

Pappy
04-20-2009, 07:10 PM
Bryd retained the lead as the 3rd lap was complete and I saw no signs of smoke, but you could smell it

Pappy
04-20-2009, 07:11 PM
Creamer held 2nd with Natalie making him sweat!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 07:13 PM
The top 3 were really turning it up

Pappy
04-20-2009, 07:14 PM
Battles were heating up everywhere as positions were being contested!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 07:18 PM
Byrd still leading,, however Creamer was about to be dealing with Weinen and Wimmer.

Pappy
04-20-2009, 07:21 PM
Weinen took Creamer and Wimmer would follow suit as Josh looks over to see what was up:p

Pappy
04-20-2009, 07:22 PM
Byrd was startingto feel his engine go away but was going to make the best of it!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 07:24 PM
As Byrd had to cut back on the throttle, it gave Wimmer the shot at him

Pappy
04-20-2009, 07:37 PM
Byrd had nothing for Wimmer and now had to try and hold onto the number 2 spot

Pappy
04-20-2009, 07:40 PM
When the dust settled, Wimmer would grab the win and another spectacular race was in the books!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 07:41 PM
Byrd would hold on to the number 2 spot

Pappy
04-20-2009, 07:43 PM
Weinen would slide in to finish 3rd, giving him 2nd overall!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 07:45 PM
Natalie would have a solid weekend as well, going 4-4

Creamer would finish 14-5 and looked pretty strong in moto 2

Pappy
04-20-2009, 07:48 PM
Cody Miller would go 5-7 giving him 5th on the weekend

Pappy
04-20-2009, 07:50 PM
Clay Holmes would go 7-9 for 6th overall

Pappy
04-20-2009, 07:55 PM
Give that man a cold drink and some applause!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 07:58 PM
Weinen rode very very well, and that trophy will look good in his trophy case!

Pappy
04-20-2009, 07:59 PM
Byrd salvaged what could have been a crappy moto and luck worked onhis side. The old cat still knows how to meow:D

Pappy
04-20-2009, 08:02 PM
And the bubbly flowed!

Thats all I got for ya folks, check out the galleries and videos on the home page and we will see everyone at the next round!

Hey Pappy, the pics were great, but the commentating was even better. Enjoyed reading and looking at all 11 pages. Best race coverage I've seen, I appreciate all the work it must have been.

Thanks guys, we always try and make you feel like you were there!

Yes sir Dan, it was alot of work, especially since I was doing the GNCC coverage at the same time!:D

We usually do not do coverage like this for the MX series, but if everyone likes it or wants it, they need to speak up. I dont make the call on whether it continues or all we get is the live updates so you'll have to let the main man Foley know what you want!

Me and the boy will be at many more rounds of the AMA MX series this season. I did half of the last season and Harlen the other half so we are doing that again this year. Me and the kid love being there!

Awesome coverage and pics Pappy. Your commentary makes you feel like you were there front and center. My vote is to keep the MX series coverage coming for all to enjoy especially for those of us that can't be there to enjoy the races.

I'll volunteer my services to be on look out for hot girls while your taking pics:devil: :blah:

Believe it or not, we are discussing that very thing for the near future. He still has some learning to do but by next season, we might be able to cut him loose....adding another hired gun to the arsenal:p

Coverage from both series would be SWEEET :D

I'm just a broke college kid lucky to make 3 or 4 nationals a year, so your coverage is my link to the national scene since I'm not there as much as I'd like to be.

Well, so much for me trying to slip around unnoticed in my old kogger look outfit & had to be the first pic shown.

Good coverage Pappy, lot of work I can tell for sure.
