exhaust pipe sanding need info

All right you guys know how the pipe on your quad gets the rusty/dirty look to it(stock pipes). I was wondering if i can sand it off with some sand paper. my friend did it and i came out ok but when i tried it scratched it up. anyone ever do this and have it come out good?

did he put any coating on it? my curtis sparks exhaust went to crap after the first times use and i'm trying to find out if i need can put a protective coat on the metal. sanding rust off won't keep rust off.

that's what was on my exhaust when i got it, it came with ceramic coating, and it started chipping more and more.
