How about a BANSHEE rad or an old LT250R rad ?

I know they were monted in front of the steering stem.

Check & see if you have a Motorcycle wreckers near you!

You'd be surprised how you could get a bike rad to fit on the 400ex frame.

I read an article in Dirt Wheels a while back where they built a 500cc 400ex and it had water jackets welded to the cylinder and they used a bike rad for their build and they said it worked good!

that was four stroke tech's liquid cooled 500EX. i tried to call mickey dunlap and he won't be around until monday. i hope he will tell me what radiator he used and how he mounted it. the 250r rad can work but the clearences are very close.

Yeah!

That's the one.

Hopefully Mickey will remember which rad he used & will disclose that info.

Keep us posted!

I may have to put a 250R motor in my 400ex frame afterall.

alot of people will disagree with this statement, but i believe the 400ex handles better for a woods style rider. i have a stock framed 86 and its great but it can be twitchy. my 400 feels like its on rails. hopefully i can balance the benefits of the 400 and 250.

My 250R "IS" on rails!
I haven't run across anything that can corner with a 250R.
Just my 2 cents!

As far as Radiators go:
You might have to look around at the local bike dealer and see what may fit on there..........bring a tape measure and see!

I know theres somethin' out there! Maybe a early Ninja 250?

don't get me wrong, my 250r handles nice but it seems i have to slide it more than on my ex to corner better. either way, they both are great machines.

i have the 250r rad, but it is a tight fit with my pipe. i would have to offset it in a way that will prevent me from filling it. i found a street bike rad that will fit between the front frame rails.

the radiator is for a kawasaki vulcan en500c (13.5x6.5) i believe it has bigger outlets but that doesn't seem to be a problem.

i haven't got the rad yet but money just got tight. i will get it soon and confirm it will work.

i haven't started a project thread because i do not have a camera to upload pics.

the only issues are "best" radiator placement. which i have solved and the inner tie rod end hits the pipe. to solve this i need to cur out about an inch of the header and have it tig welded. there is no issue with the suspension travel where the pipe is between the a-arms as most people would suspect.

i know all too well as to what your saying about the pipe hitting, as well as the issue with the rad having to be offset and hiding the rad cap. i built a '03 stroker just last year. i'm wanting to build another one but, for myself  they are fun as hell to ride.

i juss happen to be reading the threads and your's caught my attention. thought i'd follow up on it.

it will be awesome. i am getting impatient. work slowed so i have to be patient. i want it to look professional so i aint just hacking and welding.

the wiring is my new problem. i am going to have to make munting brackets for cdi, regulator coil atc. and don't know where to start.

i got the street bike rad between the front rails from mickey dunlaps 500ex. i haven't been able to get hold of him to find the specific rad he used. i may try to contact him again today.
