I have an 02 400ex with just carb jetting, white brothers e series, uni foam filter, and the sparks timing advance key. I have quite a bit more power now than stock but I really want to get as much low-mid as I can since I climb some hills and do alot of trail riding. I rarely go past 3rd gear and have only hit 5th gear like 5 times lol I know im pitiful lol but anyway.

Have any of you had a similar setup and changed the stock 15 tooth sprocket to a 14 tooth sprocket and if so did you get much power change?

I love riding wheelies and messing around on trails, I dont go fast for long distances but I do like to do some fast accel then back down.

Mainly im just looking for the best low end I can get

I also am a fan of the low end torque opposed to going fast in high gears. I currently am running 14/36 with 18" rear tires, but im going to go to 13/36 so i can stay in 3rd the whole time instead of switching from 2nd to 3rd often. If i were you i would just drop the front sprocket one tooth and see how you like it, its less than $20 for a front sprocket so its not that bad if you choose to not use it. I ride mostly trails and some times i hit the mx track, I hope this helps

You will for sure like that lower gearing in the dunes.

I dropped down a tooth on the front to a 14t and I did notice a difference in the trails not having to shift between 2nd and 3rd as much. As far as low end power it didn't do anything spectacular just a little more jump. If you don't ride the thing full out in fifth you have nothing to loose.

Along with my Sparks key and jetting my smaller front sprocket is the best mod I have made.

It does make first gear pretty useless because its so low, but I like it that way. I can idle through about anything without the motor stalling now or having to mess with the clutch

Yeah I think I will order the 14T sprocket now, worse case scenario is I dont like it for some reason but heck its only like 17 bucks and if I dont like it I can give it away to someone who might lol

Def go with it. you wont be disappointed. just put one on my buddys 400. I like it alot a will be getting one for mine soon. when ur in the trails, you almost dont have to shift or use ur clutch. and wheelies are easy as pie.

Make sure you get the one for the 99-2004 Ex's, the sprocket is different for the newer machines

Yeah I actually looked into like 20 different ones on ebay and they either didnt have good feedback or they misrepresented it as working on the older quads and then saying only for 05+

if you buy one off ebay guys MAKE SURE you read into it.

yeah, ^^^^ i love my 15 but i guess i will have to try the 14 this weekend when I go home. I gotta find out what the hype is about this. All i ever used it for was when i ran my 21" mud sharks when it was stock. I am doing it when I go home. steve

since I am running 22 inch razr2's then the 14 tooth would be like me running 18 inch tires right?

i think it will be like running a 15 with 20's, you need a 13 to be at 15 with 18", which like 20's with a 14. I think i did it right. steve

but the 14t should help me get around alot better with the 22 inch tires right?

yeah you had your 15 on before, so with the new 14 it should help quite a bit. I think you will like it. it is like running the stock gearing again. It will not be quite as low as i think you thought it would be. If you want that you would need a 13 front or a 40 rear. then you would have a ton of low again. Steve

I have a 13t for 99-04 ex's that was on my 440 for like 2 months before i blew it, so its pretty much brand new if anyone wants to buy it.

send me a pm with a price hypersniper

I might be gearing down again if im not happy with the 14t lol

Im running a 13 and I love it. Helps climbing hills in 2nd gear and I'm always in 3rd in the trails instead of jumping down to 2nd so often.
