ok it cranks and idles all day long, but as soon as you give it some gas it boggs down. With the choke barely on it will run if you stay on the throttle.

thus far i have changed plug, cleaned air filter, switched out the carb from the other identical machine i have that runs fine, drilled a hole through the feul filter, and ran a fuel line straight from the tank to the carb to eliminate the shut off valve. none of the things had any effect.

i am running out of ideas! acts like it's starving for fuel, but after trying a working carb and running a fuel line straight from the tank i am stumped... PLEASE HELP!!

check your throttle cable for too much play.there is a switch in the housing called a ETC. if too much play the switch will be open and will not let the motor rev over 1500rpm. it is a safety device in case the throttle sticks open or cable brakes.

Was that the problem? I have a 2001 that is doing the same thing. Compression was low so I put some new rings in it and it still does the exact same thing.

It was doing it last summer and I put a new carb on it after cleaning the old several times. The new carb did not help so I checked compression and it was down to 10 lbs. Just got around to reringing it last week and it does the exact same thing. Will clean the old carb and slap that one back on this weekend to see what happens.

10lbs,i can't believe the thing even started with that low of compression.what is the compression after new rings?should be around 110-120.maybe your gauge is bad.when cleaning carb make sure you can see light through the pilot jet hole and jet .try raising the needle all the way up(lower the clip)this will richen carb in mid range.adj from there

It would only start and run for a few seconds at 10lbs. I have 82 lbs with the new rings. I clened the old carb and put it on yesterday and it runs as it should now but the air adjust screw is only turned out about 1/2 a turn. I might be able to tune it a little more but once I got it running my daughter would not give me any time to tweak on it.
