I just got done rebuilding my 400 for the second time in 3 weeks . The first time I just thought they bored it wrong. Now come to find out after almost ruining this rebuild my oil tank screen was plugged so it has been starving the oil pump. It was fine at lower rpms but at higher rpms is when I had problems. Has any one else had this problem?

you gotta remove the line from the tank and its right there.

yea you have to remove the line from the bottom of the tank and then remove the fitting that the line was hooked to. There is a screen on the tank side of that fitting. You will have to drain you oil.

there is also a oil screen inside the engine, if the oil tank screen is plugged you may want to check it too

If your rebuilding your motor dont forget the screen on the bottom of the case on the clutch side, one thing that gets overlooked alot.

I did clean that screen because I was in there replacing the cam chain.

i wish i had one in my 450 :( when i piston skirt blew off i cleaned house and flushed the hell out of it but recently after 30 or so more hours on the new top end i was inspecting the magneto side before an oilchange and looked under the pump pick up and there were 4 chunks of skirt right there, all to big to get picked up but heres no screens on the crf at all, scary thought

yes, check the one in the bottom of the oil tank next time you change the oil.

was anything damaged from the lack of oil at high rpms? how could you tell it wasnt pumping much oil?

that screen was one of the first things I checked when my engine seized a week ago at the dunes, but it was perfectly clean

Yea it was probably damaged but it still runs. After I get back from the dunes I will do a bore and rebuild. I did take it out after I clean the filter and opened it up. It seemed to run really well. I guess the dunes will be the true test. I originally pulled the line that comes off of the oil tank and nothing was coming out. So then I pulled the filter and it was dirty. I think it was still pumping but I don't think it was enough.

well at least nothing is completely destroyed, thats a good thing. I have my case split open right now still tryin to get all the metal chunks of my sleeve out.

but definitely a good idea to check that screen when you change your oil

I rode my quad at the dunes for 4 days and no problems.
