We have an 09 Apex lt mxr. The engine has a Hetrick port and polish job, stock exhaust and stock 24mm carb, stock clutch with 5 grm rollers.. I was cleaning the stator and the area around it and noticed that the timing was advanced all the way to the right. I mean that the slot on the top where the screw is.the screw is all the way over to the lefthand side of the slot. The way I understand it this engine is advanced the most it can go. I figured this had to move. So I moved it so you can see about 3/16" maby an 8th" of the slot to the left of the allen bolt.

Where is a good place to start. And how do you tell how much it is advanced? I know I have some issues with this mini because it doesn't come out of the hole like it should. It's driving me crazy. I mean out of 16 mini's it's 15 to last in the holeshot. He's having to ride his butt off to finish 2nd. If I just could get him in the top 5 at the start things would be different. I thought I'd ask here Because I've Bothered Rich enough this week. Plus he's to busy to bother. Need Help now!

your gonna need a depth gauge tool to put in the engine where the spark plug is at. You measure off of that so many thousandths of an inch BEFORE TOP DEAD CENTER. Rotate engine, go to top dead center, then backup to your measurement. It can be anywhere from 1.2 mm to 4 mm. You'll have to find out from the engine builder his recommendation.:) :)

i think you are looking at it backwards.the engine turns clockwize from looking at the stater or flywheel side.it sounds to me that you are retarded with the timing all the way if you have the stater rotated all the way to the right .full advance would be stater rotated all the way to the left or counter clockwise.
the slot should be to the left of the bolt .the upper bolt at about 10 o-clock. hope this helps

When you look at the top allen bolt. There is about an 8th of an inch of the slot showing to the left of the bolt. Before I moved it the allen bolt was all the way on the lefthand side of the slot, with no slot showing.I was looking for a space to start some testing with. just a rough start.

well ,advancing the timing is a tricky area.too much and the motor is toast. all you can do is advanc it a little at a time and see how it runs out. you should be able to advance it the width of the bolt shaft. check plug for aluminum deposits and back fireing in the exhaust.if you have one of those retard timing alittle.also check for over heating.

Rule of thumb/ with out proper tools and knowing the port timing, set it about half the allen bolt head.
We use a cdi to advance and or retard the timing.

Hope this helps.
