a honda clymer manual has a pretty goood one in it. its not that hard to tell. You do not want it black. you just want it brown.

i am doing WOT 5th gear plug chops on new plugs and getting a dark gray color. kinda like a dark silver. i hae gone from a 175 to a 185 jet and cant see a color difference.

any ideas?

a 190?

:blah:

are you killing it at soon as you let off the throttle or does it idles for a minute? how long you doing your WFO run for?

all i can think of, either you just really lean or a problem with your plug chop procedure...

does it blow smoke? try pulling the choke and doing the plug chop. does it run like crap or does it run good up top?

seems to run well. it is pulling the front through 3rd. the whole plug chop is about 30 seconds or so. WOT to 5th, pull the clutch and kill the engine. coast to a stop. let it cool a minute and check the plug.

it actully seem to run harder with the 180 then the 185 but that could be all in my head.

should i get a tan color that fast?

runs good up top but does rev out and fall off.
i will try the choke trick tomorrow.

there is a white ring around the top edge of the electrode. i have been reading that means lean.

any truth to that?

dude forget the choke, it has nothing to do with main jet or needle. Dont let off the throttle when you cut the engin. If you are running pump gas you will not get an accurate color reading. If you let out the throttle where is the fuel going to come from to change the plug.

What carb, main jet, needle, pilot jet and set up would help in giving you better jets to try. A carb thats set up too rich will actually wash the plug and not provide any color for a long time. Even when you do get color, you don't want a shinny semi-gloss looking color. It should be like someone used "flat" black/brown paint.

its not. :D

i am not sure what all was causing the issue for me. i put in some new reeds, repacked the silencer, and tried again. i put in the 175 jet and it was slightly rich.  the engine did run much better though!!

anyway that was right at dark so i popped in the 170 jet and try again in the morning.

the carb is a 39mm quad vent keihin that came off of a ktm 300. the pilot is a 45 and i am not sure on the needle. i will check my notes and post up again.

the 170 was pretty lean so i have narrowed it down.
