i got my license a couple months ago, so my parents are gonna start looking for a truck for me. i dont want anything older then a 1999, and they dont wanna spend any more then 7 thousand. i want an ext cab short bed, and either want a v6 or the small v8, NOT the HEMI. im not gonna be pulling anything, just driving mainly to school and hauling my 4-wheeler in the back to go ride and go racing.

ANY input at all you guys have about which you would get and why would be awesome. thanks!

wow.

-payed 7 for it.
-had 83k on it
-had the 4.6 in it
-bought it last year
-i get about 17 mpg avg. it needs taller gears for the highway driving. the truck comes factory with looooow gears.

HMMM that's a hard decision... You can get a lot for 7k right now.. If your looking for a real truck I would go with the ford, they hold up better when abused... Dodge is a nice truck also.. If I were in the market for a new truck I think I might go dodge this time..

I have had three dodges one of them still in the family has 223,000 miles and starts up first turn of the key everytime. Never a problem that wasnt just maintance for a truck with over 200,000 miles. Pulled trailers and live in michigan and it was my first truck so it wasnt driven lightly. Currently have a 04 2500 with a cummins and I would put it against any truck on the road.

Wouldnt buy any other truck ever. My dad works for ford and wont buy an f-150 or any other ford trucks with how our dodges have always treated us.

gcart2: Damn you got a great deal on that truck! :eek2:

I paid 6k for my 94 Lightning.. But it is a Lightning and was in amazing condition with 75k miles.

Kinda want a bigger truck but I love my L.

If i was truck shopping right now i would be looking for a nice f-250 with a 7.3 powerstroke turbo diesel, I get whatever cab configuration i could find then i would jack it up and do some engine mods :D

I got a 98 dodge dakota 73,000miles 4x4 5.2 v8 for 5,000. my 400 fits in it nicely room on all sides. I get about 13-15mpg average on it. since I got dual exhaust im currently getting 8-9mpg why do magnaflows have to sound so good. My friend got a 98 dodge dakota 4x4 3.9 V6 5 speed club cab with 80,000miles for 4,000. he gets about 16-17mpg average

I know you can also find a few nice older rams in that price range. my cousin got a 95 dodge ram 5.2 v8 5 speed single cab long bed 122,000miles for 2,100 its a really nice truck for what he paid.

My dad has a '94 dodge ram 1500 4x4 and it currently has over 200 000 miles on it and never had any problems. He uses is as a bush truck since he bought a 2006 Ram 1500 4x4 and it's a lemon .. I swear is was put together on a friday afternoon.

I would stick with the older style Ram body style as opposed to the new. I had a 95 Ram extended cab ... was a good truck but pig on fuel.

I have no experience with Ford so I can't tell you about that.

I started out with a 92 f150 4x4 and it was my baby. The transmission gave out in it and I have to say it was probably my fault. It was leaking transmission fluid out of the transmission fluid cooler one day and I guess I didn't put enough back in. Over time, it just took a toll and gave. Now I've got an 04 f150 fx4 and haven't had a problem out of it yet.

I would go either with dodge or ford. my pap has a 07 f150 5.4 and its not like the hemi but its got some good power to it. my uncle has a older style ford like 97-03? i think and he has the 4.6 and for the size of the truck it will still get up and move and he has 132,000miles on it. I did like my bosses 06 chevy 1500 z71 6.1(i think) it was doing well then stuff started to show up like the heater not working,4x4 wouldnt engauage then one day out of no where when we were towing a trailer the tranny started to slip really bad so we pulled over and stopped and after 10 min of sitting when we went to leave it wouldnt even sift so we had to put it in 1 and get going then go back to D needless to say he got rid of it only 77,000miles.

Get a dodge! And you should think about getting the hemi over the 4.7l v8 becuase the hemi actaully get better gas mileage the 4.7l(small v8).
I have a 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 and i love it only thing i wish is that it had the hemi not the 4.7l cause i average around 12mpg. Im looking to get a dodge diesel next.

You're right, my 98 Saturn SC2 winter beater (with 157k miles) would walk all over my friends 07 F-150 5.4.

MittMan, never tow with Chevy in D unless you have the 4l80e...even then I wouldn't recommend it.

chevys do last longer, if you buy a dodge your asking for transmission problems. everybody i know with a dodge p/u has transmission troubles

ford, well i just aint ever been much on a ford.

just go ahead and get you a chevy

im a ford guy but i will try to give you both the ups and down on them

Pros:
lots of aftermarket support for whatever you need extra
the diesels are great, mountain of torque
good dealer network no matter where you live(not a dodge dealer near my house)
lots of engine options 4.0 v6,4.6 v8,5.4 v8, and if you get an older one try to find one with the good old 5.0!

Cons:
if you get an F-150 from before 2004, watch those damned transmissions, my dad is getting his rebuilt right now in his 97

the older square body ones(80-96) radiators arent up to snuff if you put any decent mods to the motor

they have a few other quirks about them but thats the main ones

thats what a real truck looks like...take notes if you wish

when your ford and dodge are in the junkyard, my chevy will still be ridin up and down the road

chevys are cheaper to fix and maintain too
