View Full Version : 86-87 or 88-89 Clutch?? Help!!

I am in the process of getting an order put together for a bunch of parts. I need a new clutch but not sure which one to order. I have an '86 R with the 89 update. Some clutches are advertised as 86-87, 88-89, and even 85 ATC and all year TRX's. Which do I need and what are the differences? Thanks!

the honda part numbers for 86-89 fibers/metals are the same, clutch springs for 86/87 and 88/89 are different. Also 86, 87/88 and 89 used different rod/lifter combo's. 85-88 used the same pressure plate, 89 was different. 85-89 used the same clutch basket, inner hub, nearly everything.

So by what you said I should be fine getting the 88-89 kit. From searching about clutches it seems that the 88-89 springs are of a different diameter and length (more desirable than 86-87?) I haven't tore into the clutch recently but when the engine/tranny is cold and I slowly release the clutch lever from a dead stop the quad lurches slightly (skips...on, off, on, off). Once it is warmed up I don't notice it as much. Basket, clutch, or both might be toast after a year of hare scrambles. Relatively stock engine, OEM basket, steels, fibers, running Honda red bottle tranny oil.

mine does the same thing, I think that was part of the reason for the constant changing of clutch rod lengths, lifters and maybe even the springs. I don't race, so its fine with me. If I raced, a positive clutch engagement w/o skips would be alot more important. I don't have a grooved baskets, inner basket isn't worn, ball bearing and lifter is fine. Everything seams good, I don't let it bother me, the skip for 2 seconds isn't a big deal to me.

The creeping sounds a lot like what is going on with my clutch, only the quad seems to jump when shifting out of neutral. The only way to keep it from stalling is to rev it a bit. It wouldn't bother me so much if it didn't make a sort of "grinding" noise. All other gears shift fine though, but finding neutral also becomes a problem. Is this just common with these machines, or is something wrong? Maybe it's a fork/drum issue.
