If I wanted to gear it down some, which is better, smaller front, or bigger rear? I know the front is the cheapest, but which will give me more torque for my buck? Oh and if it matters it is for a KFX450R

No gearing pro here, but I always hear the difference is more noticeable when changing the front sprocket.

Dropping the front 1 tooth = gaining 3 teeth on the rear or adding 1 to the front = loosing 3 teeth on rear.

Heres a pictorial:

-1 front = more acceleration, less top speed.
+1 front = less acceleration, more top speed.

Out of curiosity, what gearing and tire size are you running currently. The KFX's come with a 13 front stock, right?

14 front tooth.

and why would you need more torque on this thing? its already geared low as a mofo. unless your running paddles in the dunes or something.

just want as much torque as possible, i ordered a 13 tooth renthal yesterday, and was woondering if changing the front was the way to go. I figure why not get the extra torque, I dont wanna go 70mph on this thing anyway.

most do front (cheaper) if you go too large on rear you may need a longer chain (depending on how much the old one is streched)

both are pretty simple to change

ohsobad is right, 1 tooth front is about equal to 3 teeth rear

you may not be able to use first gear unless you want to putt-putt
in the trails

I do alot of trail riding, some pretty rocky locations sometimes. If I was to try some racing at a local track, it would be D Class, if that is the one for beginners, will I end up switching back to the 14, or is the 13 gonna be okay?

I would drop one tooth on the front

save your old sprocket

very simple to change back and forth

if you make any performance mods you will want to go back

i'm so opposite of everybody I build my quad so that i use stock gearing that is usually considered high and fill in the lack of pick up. Lugs too much in 3rd dont want to re-gear to loose my speed in 3rd then lug 4th so i throw in some mods so it will pull strong in low end of 3rd. dropping a tooth on things i feel like im inbewteen the gear i should be in or that i'm flying through te gears way to fast. cheapest way is mentioned with dropping a tooth on the front.
