Ok, I am new to YFZs but I have a chance to pick up one for cheap with a blown engine. It has the yellow special edition plastics on it. Isnt that 04? I think that is what they guy told me it was.

I was told that the engines arent the same throughout the years. I was told that the replacement has to come from a newer YFZ

Is that true? If so, what are the differences?

Engines are basically the same. I have an 04 and can use any part from an 08 in my motor.

There are some differences in the motor. In 06 they put a crank in with a longer stroke making it 449cc over the 04-05 439cc. In 07 they added the oil mod from the factory. There may be a few other small differences.

If it has yellow front plastic and black back plastic it would be an 05. If Both front and back are yellow then it would be an 06.

Ok, the back plastic is black...

So I shouldnt have any issues swapping any of the engines into this bike?

Nope........ I got an '06 engine in an '04. Bolts and plugs right in.

Why don't you just have the engine thats in it rebuilt? It would most likely be more cost effective than a complete engine replacement.

I want it done before we go to OK. in a week or two.

What needs to be replaced on it? It won't take long to rebuild if you already know what's wrong with it.

crank, rod, piston, case ect... When it went, it went BIG lol

10-4, that does pretty much require a total rebuild. Either bearings have to be pressed out of the old motor or new ones installed. The most difficult thing about the rebuild is not the actual time to do it. It's waiting on the parts to arrive. That just may put you over your 2week limit. I'm not exactly sure how much a new motor runs, but I think it'll be cheaper to rebuild yours. Let me know if you want price #'s on parts.

If it's that bad, it's time to start looking on e-bay for motors. You can usually find decient ones for $1500 - $2500.

Based on the last "blown" motor I had, you'll have $2500 in parts anyway.

Now that the YFZR is out, there seem to be alot of people dumping there YFZ stuff cheap.

The only thing about getting a used motor off of ebay is you really don't know it's TRUE condition until you pull it apart and inspect it. It may last 1 day or it may last 1 year. With that being said, I'd rather do a rebuild. This is a list of everything he said he needs and the prices for each.

Cases = $300
Crank = $230
Piston kit = $90
Gasket kit = $65
New crank bearings = $60
These are the things listed that he needs and the price is under $800. If I were charging him to do his rebuild he would have a motor that he knows is basically brand new for around $1200. If he needed for his valves to be replaced throw in around another $150 (stainless) or around $300 (titanium). That's a brand new motor for around $1500. Snyder Motor Sports also charge in the range of $500-$600 for labor fees and Rage does as well. He has alot of options and many ways to save money. It just depends on what route he wants to go.

Wow........ where do you get your parts so cheap? The best I found was $360 for cases, $300 for a crank, $150 for a piston kit, and 5 ti valves were like $70 ea x 5 = $350.

If you pick a reputable seller on e-bay it usually works out ok.

I think the time is his biggest issue, though.

Racinjunk.com is another good place to find motors.

I can actually get them cheaper than what I posted. I can get them from a friend from a local dealership at their cost. The prices that I posted came from different ebay listings. I've purchased parts from every guy listed below ;) .

Daddio, check your PMs... I noticed you swapped 04 for 06...what if any wiring, components, etc. did you add as far as like CDI swaps or adding that resistor/rectifier
